ORGANS OF SPEECH Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Department of English, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru THE ORGANS OF SPEECH 1 2 3 THE THE THE RESPIRATORY PHONATORY ARTICULATORY SYSTEM SYSTEM SYSTEM © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru 1 THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM The organs of speech - the Respiratory system are lungs the muscles of the chest and the windpipe or trachea. The primary function of the lungs : to breathe or respire. Lungs- inhale & exhale Inhale: The muscles of the chest expand and consequently the lungs expand and draw the outside air in. Thus we breathe in or inhale the air which passes through the trachea into the lungs. Exhale: When the muscles of the chest contract the Iungs are compressed and throw the air out. Thus we breathe out or exhale the air we have breathed in. © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru 1 THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Respiratory system provides the air stream which is the basis for the production of speech sounds AIR STREAM MECHANISM [ASM] 1. Glottalic ASM/Pharyngeal ASM- the air stream above the glottis which is closed for the production of sounds using this air stream (e.g) Sindhi - has sounds with glottalic ingressive ASM and are called implosives © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru 1 THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM 2. Velaric ASM- a. sounds produced with the air in front of the velum or the soft palate b. The passage of air from the lungs is blocked by the back of the tongue which makes firm contact with the velum. This is known as the velaric air stream. c. (eg.) African langugages and some South American languages © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru 1 THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM 3. Pulmonic ASM it is the air exhaled from the lungs which initiates the air stream. the air which is breathed initiates the air-steam for speech production. It is known as the pulmonic egressive air steam mechanism. all the languages of the world © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru THE PHONATORY SYSTEM The Phonatory system is comprised of the larynx in the throat © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru 3 THE ARTICULATORY SYSTEM THE PHARYNX THE LIPS THE TEETH THE TEETH RIDGE THE HARD PALATE THE SOFT PALATE THE UVULA THE TONGUE © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru 3 THE ARTICULATORY SYSTEM THE PHARYNX : pharynx extends from the top of the larynx to the roof of the tongue which lies opposite it THE LIPS THE TEETH THE TEETH RIDGE/ Alveolar ridge: convex part of the roof of the mouth lying just behind the upper teeth THE HARD PALATE THE SOFT PALATE/ VELUM THE UVULA: There hangs at the very end of the soft palate a small pendent-like fleshy 'tongue' THE TONGUE © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru SOFT PALATE The soft palate acts as a valve in opening and closing the nasal passage of air. Oral sounds: Sounds produced when soft palate is raised, passage into nose is closed, air cannot escape through nose and air escapes through mouth. (eg) bag, saw, date Velic Closure: Closure of nasal passage by raising soft palate/velum © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru SOFT PALATE Nasal sounds: Sounds produced when the soft palate is lowered, passage into the nose is opened & mouth is blocked, air escapes through nose. (eg) sum, sung, sun Velic opening: The opening affected by lowering of the soft palate/velum Nasalised sounds: Sounds produced when soft palate lowered, nasal passage is opened, oral passsage also not blocked, air escapes through nose and mouth (eg) bon (French), eye, camel (Hindi) © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru TONGUE Most mobile organ of speech- move forward, backward, upward, downward, touch any part of the mouth Pronunciation: vowels- raised or lowered without touching roof of mouth; consonants- makes contact with some part of mouth Five parts Tip of the tongue Blade of the tongue Middle of the tongue Back of the tongue Root of the tongue © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru TONGUE Tip of the tongue: called Apex (eg) thanks, brother Blade of the tongue: after apex, opposite teeth ridge (organs at rest) (eg) sum, zoo, dam, name Middle of the tongue: called the Front of the tongue, opposite hard palate (eg) ship, eat Back of the tongue: called Dorsum, opposite soft palate (eg) alms, court, king, good Root of the tongue: beyond back © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru © Dr. Giftsy Dorcas E., Assistant Professor, Dept. of English , Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru
