Module 1: Nature and Process of Communication What is Communication? Communication is essential to human life. Without it, we cannot function properly. One of the primary ways we communicate is through oral communication. This includes language. We use language for many reasons and in many ways. Understanding communication, particularly oral communication, helps us become more competent in communication. Process of Communication: 1. Sender - The transmitter of verbal and non-verbal messages. - Senders convey messages by converting their thoughts into words. This is called codification and is done through the use of language. 2. Message - These are the ideas or thoughts that are transmitted from sender to receiver through a channel. - The message's interpretation is dependent on the receiver. In turn, the receiver's correct interpretation depends on the sender's and receiver's similar culture and experience. The culture and experience together are called schema. 3. Channel - This is the medium used by the speakers in the encoding and decoding of messages. - It connects the sender and the receiver. - Noise is anything that reduces the quality of the signal sent by the sender through the channel, weakening the communication. 4. Receiver - The decoder of the message sent by the speaker - The receiver hears the signals and converts them into their thoughts. This is called decoding, deciphering, or interpretation. 5. Feedback - The receiver’s response to the message sent by the speaker. - Refers to a message transmitted by the receiver in response to the message of the speaker.q - Feedback is important in producing understanding between senders and receivers.
