ORAL COM 1^ST^ QUARTER NOTES **Communication** -- a human activity - A complex process - Series of dynamic activities - Ongoing & changing - Derived from the latin word "Communis" **Intrapersonal** -- speaks within him/herself or a prayer **Interpersonal** -- two people, several or big groups **Written** -- sending & receiving **Oral** -- listening & speaking **Two types of Oral Communication**: 1. Formal -- conducting seminar, lectures, delivering a speech or presenting a business proposal 2. Informal -- talking with your friends over the phone or face to face conversations **Non-verbal** -- sending & receiving message without the use of words - Facial expression - Eye contact - Body language - Voice - Smile **Audio** -- primarily uses sounds to communicate or any form of transmission that is based on hearing **Visual** -- uses aids, such as pictures, drawings, illustration and graphic organizers like chart and tables **Elements of communication**: 1. **Speaker** -- source of the information 2. **Message** -- the information 3. **Encoding** -- process of converting the message into words 4. **Channel** -- the medium or the means 5. **Decoding** -- process of interpretation 6. **Receiver** -- recipient of the message 7. **Feedback** -- reaction, responses or information provided by the receiver 8. **Context/situation** -- the environment where the communication happens 9. **Noise/barrier** -- factors that affect the flow of communication 1. **Linear model** --more focused in public speaking 2. **Transactional model** -- two-way process 3. **Interactive model** -- participants alternate positions as sender & receiver **Tenets of communication** - Dynamic - Unrepeatable & irreversible **Code** -- systematic arrangement of letters, figures or symbols **Word** -- verbal symbol and is distinct meaningful element of language **Phoneme** -- sounds represented bye /a/ in the word car, /t/ in tree and /p/ in pal **Reduplication of the same syllables** -- some words are formed with silent letters **Syntax** -- meaningful arrangement of words & phrases
