Weight gain 11) Nursing guidelines about nutrition during postpartum period. 12) References. 6 Introduction Postpartum is critical period, worldwide most maternal death occur during this period from a nutrition perspective this period is essential to maternal and fetal health. The world health organization WHO has published guidelines for postpartum care (WHO _ 1998) many of the guidelines have implication for the nutrition professional guidelines for maternal nutrition including supplementation general diet and prevention of micronutrient deficiencies. Postpartum care should be a collaboration between parents, families, and caregiver and health professionals. Essential component of care include promotion of breast feeding, contraceptive and nutritional advice. Nutrition during postpartum period is considered a critical role for nursing and to keep a woman healthy and prevent complications such as infection and anemia. Eating healthy diet help women to free from exhaustion and changes in mood associated with postpartum period. 7 Definition of Nutrition: The process of taking in food and using it for growth, metabolism, and repair. Nutritional stages are ingestion digestion absorption transport assimilation excretion. Importance of nutrition during postpartum period: 1) Replace the nutrients which lost during pregnancy and labor. 2) Promote wound healing. 3) Prevent complications such as anemia, infection and post-partum hemorrhage. 4) Maintain body weight and shape. 5) Improve the immunity and defense mechanism of the mother. 6) Good nutrition is necessary for the process of lactation and production of milk. 7) Provide energy. Factors affecting nutrition during postpartum period: 1) Economic status: - The type of food taken is determined by the economic status of family, if the family rich all nutrients and elements will be taken. If the family is poor, usually all elements will not be taken. 2) Weight:- The mother underweight needs more calories & vitamins more than obese women. 3) Age:- Adolescent mother need more nutrients more than old age. 4) Type of labor: - Normal or caesarean section determines diet that will be eaten. 5) Psychological status:- Psychological status has a role in the type of diet taken and quantity of it. 6) Personal preference:- People like and dislike food according to their preference. 7) Occupation:- If mother work, she will depend on fast food. 8 8) Environmental factor: - If environment rich by certain type of food, it will be eaten more than other types that doesn't present. 9) Medical condition: - If mother suffer from any disease, she will limit from certain elements. 10) Religious practices: - Some religion limits eating certain types of food. 11) Vegetarianism. 12) Fatigue. 13) Loss of appetite. Indicators of nutritional need during postpartum period: 1- Anthropometric indicator:- Anthropometric measurements include weight, height, and body mass index (BMI) during postpartum to determine if the woman is underweight, overweight gain or excessive weight loss and so identify the appropriate diet for the woman for example: ✓ If the woman is underweight, the mother should increase fat and carbohydrate intake. ✓ If the woman is overweight, the mother should decrease fat and carbohydrate intake. Indicator Description Under weight Current BMI 29 2- Biochemical indicator:- Indicator Description Low hemoglobin / In early postpartum:- hematocrit ✓ Hb level from 10-11.9 g/dl. ✓ Hematocrit level (Hct) from 30.0- 35.6 % 9 Very Low Hemoglobin / ✓ Hemoglobin level (Hgb)
