Noun Reference Sheet! Nouns: Dictionary entries for nouns consist of the nominative and genitive singular (the first two forms,), the gender, and the definition. For normal nouns, the genitive is often just given as the ending. Third declension nouns might have strange looking nominatives, so use the stem you get from removing -is from the genitive. puella, puellae, f. “girl” ludus, ludī, m. “school” officium, officiī, n. “duty” urbs, urbis, f.: “city” animal, animalis, n.: “animal” Remember that declensions are groups of nouns that are declined in the same way, i.e., they look the same. Each noun is just part of one declension. You cannot change this. The rules for neuter nouns: 1) The nominative and accusative of neuter nouns look the same. 2) Nominative and Accusative Plurals end in -a Singular 1st Declension 2nd Declension M. 2nd Declension N. Also, imber, linter, ūter, and venter. A very few of these nouns may have accusative singular in –im and accusative plural in –īs. Neuters in -e, -al, -ar, such as mare, animal, and calcar. 3rd Declension i-stems with ablative singular in -e: Masculine and Feminine nouns with nominative in -ēs, genitive in -is like nubēs, nubis or those with a single syllable nominative ending in -s or -x such as urbs, urbis Nouns in -tās, -tātis, or -ns, ntis, These genitive plurals have –um instead of –ium: canis, iuvenis, mare, vātēs, and there are a few more irregularities. manus, manūs, f: hand cornū, cornūs, n: horn rēs, reī, f: thing th Singular 4 Decl, M/F 4th Decl. I will accept either quantity on quizzes and tests. A few fourth declension will also have dative and ablative plurals in -ubus, but don’t worry about that.
