Personal Protective Equipment in Healthcare Work Health & Safety HSC- Learning Outcome 3.4 1123 2 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Are specialized clothing or equipment worn by an employee for protection against infectious materials to improve personal safety. Employers MUST: Provide appropriate PPE for all employees Ensure that disposable PPE is discarded properly or ensure that reusable PPE is cleaned, laundered, repaired and stored after use. 3 PPE used in Healthcare: 1. Gloves: used to protect hands. 2. Gowns/Aprons: used to protect skin and/or clothing. 3. Face Masks: used to protect mouth/nose. 4. Respirators: used to protect respiratory tract from air-borne infectious agents. 5. Goggles: used to protect eyes. 6. Face Shields: used to protect face, mouth, nose, and eyes. 7. Head Cover and Shoe Cover. 4 Factors influencing PPE selection: 1. Type of exposure anticipated Splash/spray versus touch Category of isolation precautions 2. Durability and appropriateness for the task 3. Fit to use 5 Correct sequence to DON or PUT ON your PPE (in order): 1. Proper Hand Hygiene (hand wash with soap or use alcohol) 2. Gown 3. Mask / Respirator 4. Goggles / Face Shield 5. Gloves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quwzg7Vixsw&t=213s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxdaSeq4EVU 6 Correct sequence to DOFF or REMOVE your PPE (in order): 1. Gloves 2. Goggles / Face Shield 3. Gown 4. Mask / Respirator 5. Proper Hand Hygiene (hand wash with soap or use alcohol) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quwzg7Vixsw&t=213s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxdaSeq4EVU 7 Properties of Gloves: 1. Protects hands 2. Glove material: vinyl, latex, nitrile. NEVER WOOL. 3. Comes as sterile or non-sterile 4. One or two pairs 5. Single use or re-usable 8 Do’s and Don’ts when wearing gloves: Work from “clean to dirty”. Limit opportunities for “touch contamination”: protect yourself and other. Don’t touch your face or adjust PPE with contaminated gloves. Don’t touch environmental surfaces except as necessary during patient care. Always change gloves whenever required. Discard in appropriate waste container. Never wash or reuse disposable gloves. 9 Properties of Gowns/Aprons: THREE (3) factors that influence the selection of a gown or apron as PPE: 1. Purpose of use: used for isolation 2. Material: - Reusable or disposable - Resistance to fluid penetration 3. Clean or sterile gowns 10 Face Protection: 1. Masks: protect nose and mouth Should fully cover nose and mouth and prevent fluid penetration 2. Goggles: protect eyes Should fit snuggly over and around eyes Personal glasses not a substitute for goggles 3. Face shields: protect face, nose, mouth and eyes Should cover forehead, extend below chin and wrap around side of face 11 FOUR (4) general points about PPE: 1. DON before contact with the patient, generally before entering the room. 2. Use carefully – don’t spread contamination. 3. Remove and discard carefully, either at the doorway or immediately outside patient room. Remove respirator outside room. 4. Immediately perform proper hand hygiene. 12 Where should PPEs be removed: At doorway, before leaving patient room (if only used PPE is gloves). Remove mask outside the room, after the door has been closed. Ensure that hand hygiene facilities (sink or alcohol-based hand pumps) are available to be used after removal of PPE.
