1. DNA-mRNA TRANSCRIPTION 2. DNA-DNA REPLICATION 3. mRNA-Protein TRANSLATION 10th grade OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson I will be able to; 1. Differentiate the kinds of chromosomal mutations; 2. Explain how changes in a DNA molecule may cause changes in its product. 3. Recognize the effect of changes in structure of chromosomes to our body. MUTATION Mutations are changes made to an organism’s genetic material. MUTATION Changes may be due to errors in replication, transcription, radiation, viruses and many other things. Is MUTATION bad or good? Mutation can occur: REPRODUCTIVE CELLS BODY CELLS Point Mutations Are large category of mutations that describe a change in single nucleotide of DNA, that causes the DNA to be different from a normal type gene sequence. POINT MUTATION Genetic Disorder Caused by an abnormality in the genetic makeup of an individual It can be caused by a chromosomal abnormality. KARYOTYPE KARYOTYPING Karyotyping is the process of pairing and ordering all the chromosomes of an organism, thus providing a genome-wide snapshot of an individual’s chromosomes. Karyotypes are prepared using standardized staining procedures that reveal characteristic structural features for each chromosome.
