Like the Philippines, Indonesia is an archipelago, with thousands of islands serving as home to indigenous communities. Indonesia is also a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN). Indonesia has a reach culture that is greatly influence by religion.  GAMELAN Gamelan is an ensemble composed of several Indonesian indigenous instrument. Gamelan is Javanese word which means “orchestra”. A gamelan ensembles consist of 4-25 musicians, and it may include singers as required. INSTRUMENTS USED IN GAMELAN  SARON These are xylophones with five to nine keys each. The keys are hit with a wooden mallet called tabuh. The sarons come in different sizes. Saron demung is the largest and plays the melody. Saron barung is an octave higher than demung. Saron panerus also plays the melody but doubles the note and creates syncopation. And the saron slentem that plays an octave lower than the demung  GABANG This idiophone is a xylophone with twenty-one keys made from wood. Sometimes, this instrument is combined with the sarons  GONGS These are instruments that support the fixed melody. The gong ageng is a huge suspended gong that marks every repetition of the fixed melody. The kempul, also a part of the colotomic group, is a suspended definite-pitched gong that sounds an octave higher than the gong ageng. The kenong, hanging in a horizontal box, looks like a kettle that sounds an octave higher. The ketuk and kempyang are similar and smaller gongs.  KENDANG This is a two-headed drum used to keep the tempo and signal some of the transitions of the entire ensemble  GENDERS These instruments are metallophones with keys made of bronze. These are played using a pair of padded mallets. The gender panerus is the highest-pitched among the genders. The gender barung is an octave lower than the gender panerus. The gender demung is even lower that plays the main theme. The lowest in this family of metallophones is the gender slentem  BONANGS Just like the genders and sarons, these kettle-like instruments are arranged according to their pitch from highest to lowest- bonang panerus, bonang barung, and bonang panembung  REBAB Additional Instruments: The rebab is a bowed instrument. This resembles a violin but with only two strings and a heart-shaped resonator.  SULING The suling is an end- blown flute. It is sometimes included in the gamelan ensemble to play ornamentation for the main theme TUNING SYSTEM IN INDONESIA  Slendro & Pelog One is the slendro that is composed of five tones, and the other is pelog that is composed of seven tones. Pelog is a seven-note scale found in Indonesian music.
