Folk art is defined as a classic decorative, musical, or practical art of different cultures or regions. Folk art is usually unique to the people of a specific location and used as an expression of society. WHAT IS FOLK ARTS? Folk art is steeped in grassroots history and often distinguished from the academic, self-conscious, or cosmopolitan forms of artistic expression. Folk art is the artistic expression of the various traditions and cultures around the world in simple words. WHAT IS TRADITIONAL FOLK ARTS? Traditional folk art is ingrained in many traditions and customs originating from historically old and important cultures. Traditional folk art expresses a culture's identity by communicating shared aesthetics and values of society. Traditional folk art often consists of utilitarian and ornamental media, including wood, metal, cloth, clay, paper, and more. It also expresses the hope of a bright future if you are prepared for the challenges ahead. FOLK SONG Another example of folk song from Luzon is the “Manang Biday” courtship song wherein the name of the lady is Biday, is requested to open the window to see and hear the good intentions of the man courting her. KUMINTANG Kumintang is a song and dance style th from the 19 century. It is the former name of Batangas. It is considered as a war song. Performed by a man and woman who exchange musical phrases concern love and courtship. KUMINTANG While the exchange of music is going on dancers and members of the audience would pass around a glass of lambanog, a filipino native wine made from coconut sap. Example of kumintang songs is entitled “PRINSESA DE KUMINTANG” KUNDIMAN Kundiman is about love, some songs express nationalism. The popular Kundiman song is the “BAYAN KO” during the 1986 EDSA Revolution. “Ang Kundiman ng Himagsikan” which is considered as Kundiman of the Katipuneros. SALIDUMMAY Refers to a song that is identified with the Cordilleras. Each song is characterized by seven syllables made per line. These songs may be sung for any occasion. Usually sung by children. OGGAYAM Kalinga chant that greets visitors in a celebration. Serves as an opening prayer in gatherings and a prayer for blessing houses, peace pacts and weddings. BADIW Ibaloi chant directed to the spirit of a dead person. Usually delivered by an elder of a community to ask for guidance for a particular occasion.
