Opening Prayer Motivation Learning Competencies Understand the characteristics of the vocal and instrumental music of Mindoro. Appreciate their unique tradtions and social rituals. Identify popular instruments of Mindoro. Introduction: Mindoro is home to the indigenous people known as the Mangyans. Even though their number may not be significant in terms of statistics, their influence is very much felt most especially in the kind of music they contribute to the culture of the province. Among the many groups of Mangyans in Mindoro, the Hanunuo- Mangyans are the most prominent of them all because of their poetic song called ambahan. Vocal Form Ambahan is a traditional rhythmic poetry written on bamboo tubes. It is composed of seven syllables in a line that is chanted with undetermined pitch and accompanied by musical instruments. The ambahan is written to express an idea or feeling in a creative and expressive manner. It can be written to express celebration about of one’s life. It can also be about courtship, home, marriage, old age, and even death. As the Mangyans want their ambahan to be remembered, taught, and passed on to the next generation, they wrote and carved their chants in bamboo laths using any pointed and sharp objects. Instrumental Music The Mangyans have various musical instruments which they use for different festivities and social functions. They are mostly use for courtship. Agung is a bossed bronze gong. Babandil is a metal gong that is struck by a wooden stick on its side to produce a high-frequency sound. Batiwtiw is a bamboo instrument, played by striking the split end of a bamboo against the left palm. Gitgit is a bamboo instrument with 3 or 4 strings. The bow is made from human hair. Kudlung has a boat-shaped body with frets. The manner of playing the strings is through plucking. Kalutang is a set of percussion sticks played by striking against each other to produce a sound or pitch. Kinaban is a slim bamboo instrument of different shapes approximately of pen size with a narrow vibrating tongue in the middle part. It is thus considered a “speaking instrument.” Lantoy is a transverse flute that has five holes and is tuned diatonically.
