**MUSC 171 EXAM STUDY NOTES: BY WEEK & COLOUR** *exam -- dec 8^th^* **WEEK ONE -- DEFINITIONS OF IMPORTANCE** BEAT/PULSE - basic unit of musical time ORGANIC BEATS - accents ( \> \> ) MEASURE/BAR -- one unit of an accented pattern (1 2 3 4) BARLINE -- in between each measure BACKBEAT -- accent on the second and fourth beat DURATION -- the length of time we hear a sound NOTES: - Whole notes -- O - Half notes -- d d - Quarter notes -- - Eight notes -- METER: (4/4 time) Top number- how many beats in a bar Bottom number -- what duration gets the beat MIXED METER: 4 measures (4/4, ¾, 4/4, ¾) *\*\*if there is no clear meter, it is out of time* TEMPO -- Speed of the music RITARD -- When a tempo slows down 8^th^ NOTES: - straight 8^th^ notes : even - Shuffle 8^th^ notes : 1^st^ part of each note is a little bit longer SYNCOPATION -- placing accents on unexpected/between beats (Harrison student) PITCH -- highness or lowness of a sound - Definite pitch: a sound you can sing - Indefinite pitch: a sound you cant sing back DYNAMICS -- Loudness or softness of a sound TIMBRE -- tone colour (raspy, smooth) used to describe voices/instruments SCALE -- patern of stepwise notes (ascending or descending) CHORD -- 3 or more notes heard simultaneously KEYS -- higher or lower and they might change for different reasons - Change a key in the same MODULATION -- changing a key in the same piece of music - \- - - - - - **SONG STRUCTURES:** CHORUS -- hook, catchiest part of a song, title of the song, repeats BRIDGE -- bridges in 2 sections VERSE - different lyrics as verses can change SOLO -- one person singing INTRO - TAG - FADE - Songs; little red corvette & viva la vida
