Culture refers to the socially constructed and learned ways of behaving and believing that identify individual and distinct social groups. It is a shared practice of a group of people. People who share a culture often attach a specific meaning to an object, gesture, sound, or image. LANGUAGE Is known as the storehouse of culture. It system of words and symbols used to communicate with other people. We have a lot of dialects in the Phillipines that provide a means of understanding. Mores - are strict norms that control moral and ethical behavior; they are based on definitions of right and wrong. 3. Laws - are controlled ethics and they are morally TWO COMPONENTS OF CULTURE 1. Material Culture 2. Non-Material Culture CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE 1.Culture is learned 2.Culture is shared 3.Culture is symbols 4.Culture is integrated 5.Culture is dynamic CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE 1. Culture is learned It is not biological; we do not inherit it. Much of learning culture is unconscious. We learn culture from families, peers, institutions, and media. The process of learning culture is known as enculturation. While all humans have basic biological needs such as food, sleep, and sex, the way we fulfill those needs varies cross- culturally. CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE 2. Culture is shared Culture is something that a group of people shares–it is shared practices and shared understandings. eople who are in the same culture are able to interact with each other without constant misunderstandings (for the most part) because everyone understands each other’s thoughts and actions. CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE 3. Culture is symbols A symbol is something that stands for something else. Symbols vary cross- culturally and are arbitrary. They only have meaning when people in a culture agree on their use. Language, money and art are all symbols. Language is the most important symbolic component of culture. CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE 4. Culture is integrated Culture is a complex system, made up of many parts that are interconnected and related to each other. Some examples of the parts of culture are education, technology, marriage, medicine, economics, family, beliefs and religion, government, and language. CHARACTERISTICS OF CULTURE 5. Culture is dynamic This simply means that cultures interact and change. Because most cultures are in contact with other cultures, they exchange ideas and symbols. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
