# MODULE 5 | QUALITY ASSURANCE ## CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND OUTCOMES ### 1.1 INTRODUCTION Quality has become the point of entry for any business entering the market. Without good quality, it is not even possible to compete. In today's world, the client assumes good quality and then starts comparing offerings, service levels, and other factors. This means that quality is a basic requirement and no longer a unique competitive advantage. It is an essential part of competitive service delivery. Although quality has different interpretations in different companies, the essence of quality improvement remains the same. This is confirmed by Dr W. Edwards Deming in his book _Out of the Crisis_. A common disease that afflicts management and government administration the world over is the impression that "our problems are different". They are different, to be sure, but the principles that will help to improve quality of product and of service are universal in nature. - W. Edwards Deming in _Out of the Crisis_ ### 1.2 OUTCOMES OF THE MODULE The outcomes of the module can be summarised as follows: * Build quality into processes by involving everyone connected to the process. * Create a quality-focused workplace where the focus is on: * assuring quality at the source * preventing errors and mistakes * addressing root causes of problems * mistake-proofing all systems * The ultimate aim is to achieve zero errors and zero non-conformance. ## ACTIVITY 1 1. Make a list of the main quality concerns in your unit or department. This list can contain detail around processes, events, critical procedures, patients, etc. 2. Compile a shortlist: Which of the above items have quick-win opportunities that can be solved by applying a focus on quality improvement?
