# MODULE 3 | DEVELOPING PROBLEM-SOLVING AND INNOVATION CAPABILITY ## CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION AND OUTCOMES ### 1.1 INTRODUCTION Module 3 will assist in energising the workplace as it gets everyone to think about improvement throughout the hospital. By developing problem-solving and innovation capability and establishing Continuous Improvement Teams, improvement can be driven in small groups comprised of people from different levels and functions within the organisation. It could be a group of three to five team members brainstorming about a specific problem that they faced the previous day, or it could be a small group of people from different levels thinking about a new, innovative way in which to improve processes or work methods. The aim of Module 3 is to develop the problem-solving capability in individuals and teams and ultimately to implement as many improvements as possible. In order to achieve this, solid techniques for problem-solving, idea generation and innovation must be established. ### 1.2 OUTCOMES OF THE MODULE The module's main outcomes are to: - Establish a system and provide tools for problem-solving and innovation - Engage all employees in successful problem-solving and innovation - Energise all employees to participate in the improvement journey - Provide team members with the opportunity and skills to solve problems and to implement their own improvement ideas - Support the creation of a continuous improvement culture ## ACTIVITY 1 1. Make a list of problem areas or obstacles in your unit or department that you observe or that recur on a regular basis. 2. Compile a shortlist: Which of the above problems are quick-win opportunities that can be solved through detail analysis and problem-solving techniques?
