Analyze the 4 pics word and decide what does each mean? ___________ ___________ ___________ Throughout history, art has played an integral role to capture, record and communicate events, activities, traditions and even beliefs systems of various groups of people. From Asian, Western and Philippines, art has been an instrument to reflect the things and events that transpired in the past so that the future generations can have a glimpse of that past. With the advent of technological advancements, societies have improved the ways and means through which art can be a communicative tool. If an artwork is an avenue for an artist to express narrative through symbols, then it follows that the artist is the author of the work, on the issues of ownership or authorship have emerged primarily because of the value ascribed do the viewers of work. LET’S GET DOWN TO EXPLORE What Soulmaking is Soulmaking is an alternative venue for knowing ourselves and looking into the depth and real making of what we are doing for our everyday life. (Narciso 2012) Soulmaking: Making and Deriving Meaning from Art. In order for the human to make sense of language and derive meanings from words semantic, and grammatical rules are important elements to be considered context and symbolism are also considered to interpret and analyze either verbal or written works. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 2 When it comes to art: it requires understanding the visual elements where art was the grounded on, especially the principle of design. There should be a certain level of awareness to the style, form, and the content of the said artwork. The artwork must have: 1. Style- refers to the distinctive handling of elements and media. 2. Form- is what the audience sees. 3. Content- is the subject matter and underlying meanings or themes The preview of the artwork must take into consideration the totality of elements, underlying themes and motifs and composition. Through Soulmaking (Artmaking) We can do: Crafting images Crafting stories Crafting instrument performances IMPROVISATION Define as doing something without prior preparation. Has become an integral part of the arts. Aims to rekindle the creative spirits of the people in the arts. Adds up to the totality of the work of art. Makes the artwork to have a distinctive quality that crafts its individuality and identity. Subscribe the idea of allowing chance in the process of producing the work. Example Artist would want of capture the gloom brought about by an approaching storm. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 3 He may also want to capture the scene of the glowing beauty of a meteor shows at night. When an artist makes his work/ craft. He has already ideas of the elements included in his work. He may have deviated from his original plan. He may combine visual arts to create new forms of artworks using a new medium. Art improvisation has taken forms in the galleries around New York City during 1960. Performance art, dance and visual arts combined to create new forms of artworks using a new medium. These performance were known as the “Happenings” which later on paved the way from modern body art and performance art. George Mathieu was one of the central figures in the improvisation movement. He started the “action painting” wherein the process is seen real-time In this scenario, the process is more important than the finished product Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 4 Marta Minunjin Performance Art It shows how improvisation allows for a certain extent of freedom for the artist to improve and allow the subject to perform and embody the artwork itself. To a certain extent, it allows the artist to explore and think about how the audience can actually be a part of the work in itself. Improvisation may have been a revolutionary concept when it comes to art because it blurs the line of reality and that of imagination. Example of Action Painting APPROPRIATION If an artist created a painting and deployed it in a museum, who do you think owns the artwork; the artist or his intended audience? Appropriation has been defined as the “taking over”, into a work of art, of a real object or even an existing work of art. To appropriate is to take possession of something. Appropriation artist wants the viewer to recognize the image they copy. They hope the viewers will bring all of his original associations with the image to the artist’s new context be it in painting, a sculpture, a collage, a combine or an entire installation. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD. Quizon, MAEd 5 Appropriation art has been a common practice throughout history. In the part of an apprentice painter need to hone his skills in his crafts, he would be allowed to use his master’s copy. There are some people who go to the extreme by believing that copying the exact work of an artist and attributing it to his own. This could be pose a problem especially with authorship. The problem arises when the appropriation artist would get bits and pieces from others works and incorporate these elements into his own work. There seem to be a very thin demarcation line between appropriation art and forgery. Forgery can be classified into two forms 1. Outright copies of existing work 2. Pastiches These are works that bring together elements from a work and infusing them into a new work. In contemporary times, forgery can be in form of creating an appropriate of what an artist would do by prediction. LET’S WRAP IT UP When an artist creates something, there is a desire for him or her to elicit a certain kind of response from his audience. There is a notion that art should be perceived as something that would engage and enrich the experience of the audience as the artist tries to place together all the elements grounded on design ruler. Improvisations have led artists to find other medium and avenues to showcase their creative expressions. The certain level of freedom and creativity experienced in art can also lead to appropriations. When it comes to art appropriations, these seems to be a debate whether or not something is just an appropriation of an existing work on just plain forgery. LET’S WORK ON THIS To check your understanding of the lesson, answer the following questions. 1. What are the important things the viewer or audience must consider to derive the meaning from the artwork? 2. How can improvisation, contribute to the distinctive quality of the artwork? 3. What is the reasons why artist appropriate art? DO THIS FOR YOUR OUTPUT. Write an essay in Contemporary form of art utilizing the principles of appropriation. Art Appreciation | Corazon SD.
