Module 1: GENERAL Lesson 1: CONCEPTS AND Intellectual HISTORICAL Revolution EVENTS the Defined IN SCIENCE, Society TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY Science comes from the Latin word Scientia which means “to know” involve learning new facts through solving problems the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study (scientific method) of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment – Oxford dictionary Science 1. Science as an idea. It includes ideas, theories, and all available systematic explanations and observations about the natural and physical world. 2. Science as an intellectual activity. It encompasses a systematic and practical study of the natural and physical world. This process of study involves systematic observation and experimentation. Science 3. Science as a body of knowledge. It is a subject or a discipline, a field of study, or a body of knowledge that deals with the process of learning about the natural and physical world. This is what we refer to as school science. 4. Science as a personal and social activity. This explains that science is both knowledge and activities done by humans to develop better understanding of the world around them. It is a means to improve life and to survive life. It is interwoven with people’s lives. 3 Classification of Scientific Research 1. Pure Science - searching for knowledge/idea/ information 2. Applied Science - searching for the USES of the knowledge/idea/ information 3. Technology - the craft/tool/material/instrument/apparatus/machine that are product of applying the scientific knowledge Main Branch of Science A. Social Science it is a vast field that is concerned with the human society and the relationships among individuals within it. this field also has a vast number of sub-fields such as economics, geography, political science, anthropology, history, archeology, linguistics, law, and sociology. Main Branch of Science B. Natural Science deals with the natural world it is concerned with the phenomena and objects of nature and the physical world it involves comprehension, description, and prediction of natural phenomena using empirical and observational evidence Branch Natural Science 1. Life Sciences - study of all living things; their development, changes, features and history 2. Physical Science - study all about matter and energy 3. Earth Science - study all about the features and changes of the Earth. Main Branch of Science C. Formal Sciences - is quite a unique area of study in science as it uses formal systems to produce knowledge and explore the nature of different disciplines ranging from Mathematics, Logic to Computer Science and Information Technology Technology came from the Greek words technȇ and logos which mean art and word respectively, involves creating/inventing things (things that fulfill the needs and desires or perform certain functions). it is the product of the application of the understanding of natural laws to the solution of practical problems. Intellectual Revolution is a movement about enlightenment initiated during 17th century when developments in the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology, and chemistry transformed the views of society about nature the ideas generated during this period enabled the people to reflect, rethink, and reexamine their beliefs and their way of life Intellectual Revolution where the scientific experiments and philosophical writing became “in” or trendy. the golden age for people committed to scholarly life in science but it was also deeply trying moment to some scientific individuals that led to their painful death or condemnation from the religious institutions who tried to persevere their faith, religion, and theological view an era marked by questioning of traditional dogmas / values Intellectual Revolution is very significant in the development of human beings, transformation of society, and in the formulation of scientific ideas improve the conduct of scientific investigations, experiment, and observations led to the creation of new research fields in science and prompted the establishment of a strong foundation for modern science To do ACTIVITY No. 2: REVOLUTION: DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!
