Maintenance Of Medical Equipment In Radiology And Medical Imaging Field Dr./ Hyam Nazmy Badr Khalaf Physics department - Faculty of science - Minia University 1 [email protected] 2024 Lec 2 Typical Equipment In Radiologic Technology 2 2024 Typical Equipment In Radiologic Technology 3 2024 Typical Equipment In Radiologic Technology What kinds of equipment does a radiologic technologist use? ▪ Medical technology is always advancing – and imaging is a powerful tool for providing medical care. ▪ Many diagnostic radiologic examinations can be done without invasive testing. ▪ Commonly referred to as an X-ray tech, a radiologic technologist is a type of medical professional who specializes in creating diagnostic images. 4 2024 TYPICAL EQUIPMENT IN RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY 5 2024 Typical equipment in radiologic technology There are many kinds of imaging equipment a radiologic technologist might use. These include: ▪ X-Ray Machine ▪ Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner ▪ Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Machine ▪ Mammography Unit ▪ Ultrasound Equipment Depending on the medical setting they work in, a radiographer may specialize in a certain kind of technology or assist with multiple types of imaging tests. 6 2024 X-Ray Machine ▪ Most patients are familiar with this type of imaging technology. ▪ Using external radiation, an X-ray machine creates images of bones or other tissues. ▪ Dentists use X-ray equipment to check a patient’s teeth. ▪ X-rays also are used when a patient breaks a bone. 7 2024 X-ray equipment ▪ This equipment performs the most basic simple imaging with X-rays performed by radiological technologist, which is also called general radiography. ▪ Chest, abdomen and bone imaging using this equipment. 8 2024 X-ray TV fluoroscope ▪ It is a device that photographs the digestive tract such as the stomach and intestines. ▪ Using a contrast medium such as barium, the movement of the digestive tract is displayed as a video in real time, and the captured image is digitally processed. 9 2024 Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner ▪ Also known as a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan, a CT scan can produce 3D images using a series of X-rays that rotate 360 degrees around the patient. ▪ The scanner is typically circular, with an opening in the center. ▪ The patient lies on a table that moves in and out of the scanner. 10 2024 CT device ▪ It is a device that takes a tomographic photograph of the human body using X-rays. ▪ The latest equipment called 16- row CT to construct 3D images from the data obtained from the whole body and learn the image processing necessary for clinical 11 practice. 2024 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Machine ▪ An MRI machine uses radio waves and magnets to create computer-generated images of organs, bones, or muscle tissue. ▪ Doctors may use an MRI scan to diagnose tumors, heart disease, and other issues. ▪ To become an MRI technologist does require additional schooling. 12 2024 MRI device ▪ It is a device that creates images using magnets and radio waves. ▪ Radiological technologists also handle all types of diagnostic imaging equipment that do not use radiation. 13 2024 Mammography Unit ▪ This is a type of specialized X- ray equipment used to perform mammograms. ▪ The images can help detect any changes or problems in a patient’s breast tissue. ▪ Mammography is the most effective diagnostic test for detecting malignant breast tumors at an early stage. It consists of a special x-ray device that takes 14 various x-rays of the breasts to be evaluated by a specialist. 2024 Mammography device ▪ An X-ray machine dedicated to breasts. ▪ In breast cancer screening, the most important and detailed technique is required in recent breast cancer screening, which is also called mammography. 15 2024 Ultrasound Equipment ▪ An ultrasound machine uses high-frequency sound waves to generate images of a patient’s body. ▪ Ultrasounds often are used during pregnancy to safely check fetal development. ▪ However, they also can be used to check veins, arteries, thyroid glands, and other parts of the body. 16 ▪ To become an ultrasonographer does require additional schooling. 2024 Ultrasonic device ▪ This is a test that takes a tomographic image using high-frequency ultrasonic waves that are inaudible to humans and examines the condition inside the body (cervical, abdominal, heart, blood vessel, etc.). ▪ Since it is taken without using X-rays, it is an inspection without worrying about 17 radiation exposure. 2024 Workstation ▪ In order to make the image taken by the image inspection device easier to diagnose, this workstation is used to process the digital data sent from each device to create an image with high diagnostic ability. 18 2024 Imaging Equipment ▪ Medical imaging applies to several different imaging technologies that medical professionals use to view the human body and diagnose a patient and monitor or treat abnormalities, diseases, and medical conditions. ▪ These various imaging modalities include X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and nuclear medicine, among others. 19 2024 Radiology and Imaging Equipment ▪ The diagnosis and treatment of diseases within the body using medical imaging is known as radiology, or diagnostic imaging. ▪ Radiology is a medical specialty that involves the use of medical imaging techniques to diagnose and treat diseases and injuries within the body. ▪ Radiologists, who are specialized physicians, analyze medical images to provide accurate diagnoses and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to develop appropriate treatment plans. 20 2024 Radiology and Imaging Equipment ▪ Radiology has been an important part of healthcare since its development, as diagnostic images can provide detailed answers to clinical questions related to a patient's health. ▪ Most diagnostic imaging techniques are non-invasive and painless, making the procedures manageable as a patient. ▪ That said, the discipline can be used in a variety of ways. It can support medical and surgical treatment planning, and it can be used to guide medical professionals through catheter, stent, and other medical device insertion. 21 2024 Radiology and Imaging Equipment ▪ It's also common to see radiology being used alongside other disciplines concerned with organs and the body, such as cardiology, the study of the heart. ▪ Radiologists and cardiologists often collaborate, as cardiac imaging is used to screen for heart disease and can inform a cardiologist about the state of a patient's heart. 22 2024 23 2024
