INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY LESSON I LITERACY ¡ Ability to read and write ¡ Possession of education ¡ A person’s knowledge to a particular subject or field MEDIA ¡ The means of communication such as radio, television, newspaper, magazines, etc. that reach or influence people widely. MEDIA LITERACY Media literacy is most validly seen as the repertoire of skills and capacities. The most common definition is “the ability to access, analyze, and respond to a range of media”. By range of media, this includes print, moving images, and other hybrid forms such as multimedia texts. ¡ ACCESS - denotes the knowledge of where to find these forms of media. It include the technical competence to navigate around technology and easily adjust to the technological advancements that happen every now and then. ¡ ANALYSIS - includes thinking reflectively and critically on what has been read, seen, or experienced and its implications to oneself and to one’s community. ¡ RESPONSE - includes the ability to experience and explore the pleasures of the media and how these are realized through the language of media. MEDIA LITERACY “Having access to the media, understanding the media, and creating/ expressing oneself using the media.” - Buckingham and Livingstone, 2005 ¡ It teaches how to have access to the media, acquire the critical tools to understand the media, as well as to create and express themselves using the media. ¡ It can include using the tools of media ad produce your own media texts to gain a better appreciation of the processes involved. MEDIA LITERACY’S 5 KEY QUESTIONS 1. Who created this message? 2. What creative techniques were used to attract my attention? 3. How might different people appreciated understand these messages? 4. What lifestyles, values system, perspective, point of view are represented in this message? Conversely, what is omitted? 5. Why is this message being sent? INFORMATION ¡ It is what informs us and enable us to know. ¡ It can be an answer to a question, a news or a data. ¡ It is something that is also communicable. ¡ Knowledge obtained from investigation, study, or instruction. ¡ In everyday speech, the word “information” is mostly used as an abstract widespread to refer to any amount of data, code, or text that is saved, delivered, received or modified in any media. ¡ It is a fact, thought, or data conveyed or described through various types of communication, like written, oral, visual and audio communications. INFORMATION LITERACY ¡ It is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed, and how to locate, evaluate and use it effectively. ¡ It constitutes the abilities to recognize when information id needed and to locate, evaluate, effectively use, and communicate information in its various formats. Identify Find Evaluate Apply Acknowledge TECHNOLOGY ¡ Application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or as it is sometimes phrased to the change and manipulation of the human environment. ¡ Machinery and equipment that uses the application of scientific knowledge in a particular are for practical purposes, using technical processes, methods or knowledge with a function, purpose or benefit to improve human life. ¡ The creation, usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of organization, to solve a problem or serve some purpose or end. TECHNOLOGY (DIGITAL) LITERACY ¡ It is the ability of an individual, working independently and with others, to responsibly, appropriately and effectively use technology tools to access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate. ¡ Being able to use, manage, assess and understand technology. ¡ The ability to use digital technology, communication tools or networks to locate, evaluate, use, and create information. MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY Media Information and Technology literacy plays a vital role in modern society especially in the computer age that we lived in, these 3 works hand in hand to help us cope in this changing world. ¡ With the help of media literacy, we can fully express and share our ideas, thoughts and experiences. ¡ Information literacy helps us evaluate the information and data we share. ¡ And technology literacy helps us value or appreciate the importance of these technological equipment that we can use to support us to become a better and knowledgeable individual.
