MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY: Quarter 1 – Module 1: THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION TO COMMUNICATION OBJECTIVE (MELC) Describe how communication is influenced by media and information LESSON 1: THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION TO COMMUNICATION Communication as a process Parts of communication Communication models (in relation to media and information) COMMUNICATION Communication is “simply” the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another. COMMUNICATION Communication is a process by means of sending and receiving messages through verbal or nonverbal means (ThoughtCo.com). COMMUNICATION Meanwhile, communication is the use of messages to generate meaning, both within and across a myriad of cultures, contexts, channels, and media. COMMUNICATION AS A “SIMPLE” PROCESS? It is a mistake to believe that communication is a simple process (Uychoco & Santos, 2018). BASIC PARTS OF COMMUNICATION Source : it imagines, creates, and sends the message. Message : it is the stimulus or meaning produced by the source for the receiver or audience. BASIC PARTS OF COMMUNICATION Channel : the channel is the way in which a message or messages travel between source and receiver. Receiver : the receiver receives the message from the source, analyzing and interpreting the message in ways both intended and unintended by the source. BASIC PARTS OF COMMUNICATION Feedback : When the receiver responds to the source, intentionally or unintentionally, it is called “feedback.” Feedback is composed of messages the receiver sends back to the source. Verbal or nonverbal, all these feedback signals allow the source to see how well, how accurately (or how poorly and inaccurately) the message was received. BASIC PARTS OF COMMUNICATION Other parts of communication may include environment (both physical and psychological), context (setting, scene, and expectations of the individuals involved), as well as interference or noise (anything that blocks or changes the source’s intended meaning of the message). COMMUNICATION MODELS The earliest model comes from Aristotle at around 5 B.C. COMMUNICATION MODELS Osgood-Schramm model of communication is where message may succeed or even fail depending on the interpreter’s appreciation of the message.
