Midterm Study Guide 1 Biology Intro to Biology Unit Topics Know about proper lab safety and be able to identify safe and unsafe lab activities. Be able to read a graduated cylinder, a thermometer and a triple beam balance. Know the proper units for these tools (mL, ℃, g) Know how to calculate total magnification. Be able to compare and contrast the 3 types of microscopes (stereoscopes, compound light microscope, electrons microscopes TEM,SEM) Be able to identify the following parts on a compound light microscope: ocular lens, objective lens, fine adjustment knob, coarse adjustment knob, stage and base. Know the 5 basic steps of the scientific method. Know the following terms: hypothesis, independent variable, dependent, control group. Know the difference between the control group and the experimental group. Be able to identify the key parts in an example of an experiment.( control, independent and dependent variables) Know about quantitative and qualitative data and recognize examples of each. Know about the 8 characteristics of life. Know the terms: stimuli, autotroph, evolution, growth, heterotroph, sexual and asexual reproduction Know what metabolism, anabolism and catabolism are. Be able to give an example of anabolism and catabolism. Know what homeostasis is and be able to give an example. Biochemistry Unit Know what an atom is and the 3 subatomic particles that make them up. Be able to determine the atomic number, atomic mass, # of protons, neutrons and electrons. Be able to discriminate between a neutral atom, an isotope and an ion. Know the difference between a covalent bond , polar covalent bond and an ionic bond. Know about the properties of water and why it is the universal solvent. Know what products and reactants are and where they are located in a chemical equation. Be able to identify their elements, monomers and their function. Know what an enzyme is, how it works and what the active site and substrate are. Know what inhibitors and cofactors are and how they affect enzymes. Be able to interpret the effect of pH, temperature and substrate concentration on enzyme activity. Cell Unit Know what a cell is and the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Know which organisms have prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Know what the cell theory is. Know the difference between unicellular and multicellular organisms. Know about the structure and function of the cell membrane. Be able to identify the components in a diagram. Know what the endosymbiont theory is and evidence for it. Be able to identify the following structures and their functions: mitochondria, chloroplasts, golgi apparatus, RER, SER, nucleus, and ribosomes, cell wall, vacuole Know the difference between passive and active transport. Review the Beowulf intro slides (This is going to be EPIC) in Classroom for traits of an EPIC hero and Anglo Saxon values. Section 4: Short Stories (SHORT ANSWER) (24) Know the basic storylines of “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” and “American History.” Study the Elements of Literature slides. You must be able to apply the Elements of Literature to the above mentioned stories. Review your notes and worksheets regarding these two stories. Section 5: Comprehension (23) You will read an unseen short story and answer the questions Prepare for this by knowing the Elements of Literature well Section 6: Paragraph (10) You will have a choice between four prompts to write a literary analysis paragraph.
