His sisters informed Jesus of his illness. Jesus visited him two days later. Before leaving, Jesus told his disciples that he was going to awaken Lazarus. Thomas responded that they should all go with him so that they could also die with him (John 11:11-16). The disciples were fearful of the Jewish community's reaction, but Thomas's courage remained even after Jesus's ascension. This courage empowered Thomas to travel to India to proclaim the Gospel. As a result, the Christian community in Kerala grew strong and became known as the St. Thomas community.
