# Soma Akriton - an independent youth group ## Introduction - In 1998, a group of concerned people in Cyprus founded Soma Akriton, an independent, democratic, and modern organization. - Soma Akriton's goals are to provide knowledge and ideas to Cypriot youth, reinforce the ideals of good citizenship, and raise awareness of environmental issues. ## Soma Akriton's Five Main Interest Areas - Nature exploration - Protection of the environment - Civil defense - Quality of life - General knowledge ## Soma Akriton's Activities: - The organization runs youth groups in the Nicosia area. - Groups are divided by age: 6-11, 12-15, 16-18, and over 18 years. - Currently, over 200 children and young people participate in activities from September to June. - Each group is directed by a leader and two or three assistants who have experience working with children. - All leaders have a university or college degree. ## Nature Exploration - The organization takes youth on hikes and survival excursions. - These expeditions take place throughout the year focusing on nature study and observation. - The goal is to provide building blocks for later scientific discovery. ## Protection of the Environment - Raising awareness and campaigning for environmental protection is a top priority for Soma Akriton. - Financial support was received from the European Union to help with the Save the Planet campaign. - A successful campaign against the use of plastic bags was supported by the European Union. - A campaign to promote a more environmentally friendly approach to consumerism was funded by the United Nations. - The number of plastic shopping bags produced in Cyprus has significantly decreased as a result of these campaigns.
