Curriculum Connection Name: ________________________ 28 A1.2, A3.3 Clothing – What clothing did they wear? The clothing that the Mayans wore depended on which region they lived in and what their social status was. The rich were able to afford colourful clothing made from animal skins. The poorer Mayans wore simple clothing. The men wore loincloths and the women wore long skirts. Both genders would use a blanket called a manta to wrap themselves in when it was cold. Both genders often got tattoos after they were married. Hunting and Food – What did they eat? The Mayans hunted the peccary (pig), deer, and smaller animals like dogs, rabbits, frogs, tadpoles, and grasshoppers. They used bows and arrows to hunt the larger animals and nets to catch the smaller ones. To fish, they used harpoons, fishhooks, and sometimes bows and arrows to catch larger fish. The Mayans main food source was corn, along with vegetables such as beans and squash. They would grind up the corn into cakes and flatten them into pancakes, now called tortillas. Shelter - What did they live in? The rich kings and nobles lived in large palaces made from stone. The poorer commoners live in small huts outside the city near their farms. Huts were made from mud and sometimes stone. The Mayan shelters were built on platforms to protect them from floods. Entertainment – What did the Mayans do for fun? The Mayans favourite game was called ulama. It is a ball game where two teams compete against each other to get a rubber ball through a stone ring. The ball had to be kept off the ground using anything except their hands or feet! Sometimes prisoners of war would be forced to play, with the losing team being put to death! © Super Simple Sheets
