WELCOME TO MAPEH CLASS! SITUATION: A buffet consists of different meals you can enjoy. You can eat any kind of food available in any amount that you want. If you were to go to a buffet today, what food would you choose first? How many would you get? Choose from: many, just enough, or few. Do you think you made a wise decision in your food choice? Explain. THE PRINCIPLES OF HEALTHY EATING It is important to choose healthy food in recommended amount for us to grow and develop properly. This process is called nutrition. THE PRINCIPLES OF HEALTHY EATING A balanced meal consists of energy- giving food, vegetables, fruits, meat, and healthy oils. FOOD PYRAMID A food pyramid is the easiest way to make sure that you are eating a balanced meal. This is a food guide in the form of a pyramid that shows the five healthy food groups. FOOD PYRAMID BELOW IS THE DAILY NUTRITIONAL GUIDE PYRAMID FOR FILIPINO CHILDREN AGED 7 TO 12 YEARS OLD. 1. Energy-giving food. This group is at the lowest part of the pyramid. It consists of rice, bread, and cereal. The food here should be taken in big amounts because they provide your body with energy. 2. Vegetables and fruits. This group provides your body with vitamins and minerals. These are taken in moderate amounts to keep you healthy. 3. Meat and other proteins. This group is the source of protein. Protein sources include meat, fish, milk, eggs, and cheese. These are taken in moderate amounts. They help build and repair your body. They also protect your body from diseases. 4. Healthy oils, fats, and sweets. You should consume only a small amount from this group. Although food from this group helps regulate your body, too many oils, fats, and sweets can harm it. Fats, Oils, and Sweets Group Examples: cooking oil, butter, dips, desserts, jams, candies, soft drinks, cake, and donuts Nutrients: very few or none Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, Beans, and Nuts Group Examples: pork, fish, beef, chicken, shellfish, eggs, dried beans, nuts, and peanut butter Nutrients: protein, vitamin B, iron, and phosphorous Milk Group Examples: milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt Nutrients: vitamins A, D, and B2; proteins; calcium; and phosphorous Vegetables and Fruits Group Examples: leafy green vegetables, green beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, mango, orange, apple, banana, santol, and avocado Nutrients: fiber, carbohydrates; vitamins A, C, and K; calcium; magnesium; and iron Bread, Rice, and Pasta Group Examples: bread, rice, pasta, and cereals Nutrients: fiber, vitamin B, carbohydrates, and iron FOOD PLATE (PINGGANG PINOY) A food plate is another guide in the shape of a plate model. Filipinos are encouraged to eat a balanced diet through a food plate model called Pinggang Pinoy. This is an easy- to-understand food guide that tells the right food group proportions in every meal to have a balanced diet and gain good nutrition. FOOD PLATE (PINGGANG PINOY) The recommendations for every meal are the following: 33% Go foods - Carbohydrates (Level 1 in the pyramid) 33% Glow foods - Vegetables (Level 2 in the pyramid) 17% Glow foods - Fruits (Level 2 in the pyramid) → 17% Grow foods - Proteins (Level 3 in the pyramid) BENEFITS OF EATING A BALANCED MEAL Before any physical activity, your body needs to be healthy to perform what is being asked. Eating a balanced meal is one way of making your body healthy. The following are the benefits of eating balanced meals: 1. It helps you meet the nutrient requirement of your body for growth and development. 2. It can help you prevent cancer and heart disease later in your life. 3.
