# Renewable Energy Sources This document describes different renewable energy sources and their advantages and disadvantages. ## Hydroelectric **Description:** Water falls over a dam and turns turbines to generate electricity. **Advantages:** * Can store or as backup power. * Inexpensive in the long term. * Doesn't emit carbon. **Disadvantages:** * Can harm aquatic environments if dams are built. * Can cause water pollution. * Where the dams are built, it can cause displacement of people to other locations. ## Solar **Description:** Sunlight shines on solar panels, which convert light into electricity. **Advantages:** * Reduces your electricity bills. * Doesn't emit carbon emissions. **Disadvantages:** * Needs constant sunlight to work. * Solar energy storage can be expensive. ## Wind Power **Description:** Wind turns turbines, which powers electrical generators. **Advantages:** * Generates electricity without burning harmful gases. * Creates good paying jobs and businesses. **Disadvantages:** * Intermittent- needs wind to work. * Can cause noise pollution. ## Biomass **Description:** Burning plant materials (wood, corn, etc.) produces heat or electricity. **Advantages:** * Reuses waste materials. * Reduces landfill waste. **Disadvantages:** * Releases the same amount of carbon dioxide when fossil fuels are burned. * Biomass is very costly and takes years to plan and develop.
