What is HELPER? What is HELPEEE? 3 Let’s consider this.. – Have you helped anybody in your life? – What kind of help did you give? – What made you decide to help? – What happened to the person? – How did you feel about helping? – What kinds of help can a person give? 4 Think about your own view of what helping means and examine your motives for helping people. It is good to develop a style of help that is comfortable and effective. Let’s think about what are you doing? – What are you saying? – What are you feeling? – How is the other person responding? – What does it mean to be a helper? Make a list of the behaviors you regard as helpful. 5 Cont. Try to recall people who have helped you. What were their behaviors and personal qualities that made them helpful people? How did you feel about their actions and being the recipient of help? What did you infer about their attitudes? List their helpful behaviors. Ask close friends or relatives to describe incidents when your behaviors was helpful to them? List their descriptive words and phrases. (Lawrence M. Brammer & Ginger MacDonald, 1998) 6 Examples What makes people seek for help? 7 What did you see? 8 Are you really a helper? 9 What is HELPING? A process whereby someone who needs help is being helped by someone who is able to help. Professional helping is different from normal everyday helping. 10 What is HELPING? (cont.) Professional helping requires someone seeking help and someone willing to give help who is trained to help and in a setting that permits help to be received and given in privacy. (Hackney & Cormier, 1996) The helper assists helpee to explore feelings and reactions, gaining insight and make positive changes in his/her life. 11 Who is the HELPER? Anyone who assists others to understand, overcome, or deal with external or internal problems. Who is the HELPEE? Anyone who receive assistance/help from others to deal with their concern/issues known as helpee. 12 BASIC CONDITIONS TO HELPING Interested to help. Willingness to give time to helping. Ability to suspend judgment. Patience in listening and to respond appropriately. 13 CONT… Able to refrain from dispensing quick advice. Willing to let helpee make their own decision. Understand that counseling is a 14 teaching-learning process to helpee and helper. Who is the HELPER? THREE types of helper: Non-Professionals Para-Professionals Professionals 15 Type of HELPERS: Nonprofessional helpers: Interest, have attended seminars or talks on effective communication and helping Paraprofessionals: Received more intensive training in helping on the job or at educational institutions Professionals: Specialists who have undergone lengthy training or courses at university level specialised in helping/counselling skills 16 The PROFESSIONALS : 17 Where Professional Helpers Work? By helper’s help, helpee is able self-reflect, discover potentials and gain insight of self. Receiving feedback, making decision and changes in life through helper’s facilitation. Received support for continuous change of 19 acceptable behaviour and gain confidence. Building healthy relationship. Outcomes of HELPING: 20 Effective Helpers Personal qualities (Hackney & Cormier, 2001). 1. Self-awareness and understanding. 2. Good psychological health – healthy mind, able to cope. 3. Sensitivity to understanding of racial, ethnic, and cultural factors in self and others. 4. Open-mindedness 5. Objectivity 6. IT WILL ENGENDER RESPECT FOR, AND LOYALTY TOWARDS YOU IT CAN INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY IT INCREASES THE STANDING OF THE COMPANY IN THE PUBLIC EYE (WITH ALL THE RECRUITMENT ADVANTAGES THAT BRINGS) 36 Types of Helping Relationship Profession Unprofessi al onal HELPING PROFESSION SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST – Assist in developing classroom management strategies, improving overall teaching and learning strategies. – Give special attention to learning and behavioural problems – Administer and interpret the results of standardized assessment instruments – Trained in medical models which involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating the internal pathologies of their clients. 38 HELPING PROFESSION SOCIAL WORKER –Trained to assist people, including all youth to deal effectively with their problems and concerns. –Has special interviewing and case skills that are used closely with community agencies and non- professional helpers such as physicians, lawyers and ministers. –Plays a referral role –Provide better understanding of the student, especially in regard to the home environment and the nature of the behavioural problems. 39 HELPING PROFESSION PSYCHIATRIST – Physician with specialized training in the treatment of behavioural abnormalities – Permitted by law to use drugs and other physical means of treatment for mental problems. – Counsellor can suggest to clients that they refer themselves to psychiatrist if it is suspected they may have an emotional disturbances requiring the use of medication. – Biopsychological approach 40 THANK YOU Q & A?
