4. Logic Logic is a branch of philosophy which deals with CORRECT THINKING AND REASONING Logic is not interested in what we know regarding certain subjects. Its concern rather, is the truth or the validity of our arguments regarding such objects. c. Aristotle – Ancient Greek Philosopher He was the first philosopher to devise a logical method. He understood truth to mean the agreement of knowledge with reality. TRUTH exists when the mind’s mental representations, known as IDEAS, corresponds in the “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true” “To say of what is that it is, or of what is not that it is not, is true.” In other words, the world provides “what is” or “what is not,” and the true saying or thought corresponds to the fact so provided. This idea appeals to common sense and is the germ of what is called the CORRESPONDENCE 5. Aesthetics It deals with beauty and what makes things “beautiful”. As a branch of philosophy, students should consider the importance of aesthetics because of the following: a. It vitalizes our knowledge – it makes our knowledge of the world alive and useful b. It helps us to live more deeply and richly – a work of art c. It brings us in touch with It is the philosophical study of beauty and taste The philosophy of art concerned with the nature of art and the concepts which help interpret and evaluate individual works of art. As a philosophy, aesthetic refers to the study of AESTHETICS sensory principle -in other words judgment or evaluation Beauty is studied as part of aesthetics Beauty is a character of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, What are the three theories of aesthetics? The three aesthetic theories of art criticism are most commonly referred to: Imitationalism Formalism Emotionalism Some critics think that the most important thing about a work of art is the realistic presentation of subject matter Imitationalism It refers to an art that focuses on things being realistically represented. It is a theory of art that judge's artwork based on how real it looks. Formalism It refers to the view in the philosophy of art that the properties in virtue of which an artwork is an artwork and in virtue of which its value is determined are formalin the sense of being accessible by direct sensation (typically Emotionalism An aesthetic and critical theory of art which places emphasis on the expressive qualities. According to this theory, the most important thing about artwork of art is the vivid communication of moods, feelings, and ideas. Why are aesthetics important? Aesthetics is the study of beauty. Beauty is important in life because it is representative of our values. Values are beautiful because they define our actions through life. The study of Values could be called Ethics.
