Lesson 7: Spiritual Self Spiritual Self o According to WilliamJames, spiritual self or subjective man’s inner as being, psychi his faculties or dispositions. c These dispositions are the most enduringpsychi and intimate part of the self, that which c we most certainly seem to be. Religion oConcerns with faith in the claims of one faith tradition or involving organizations oConnected with religious teachings or dogma, ritual prayer, etc. Spirituality oConcerns with the qualities of human- spirit such as love, forgiveness, care, hope, etc. oAn individual & personal experience that leads to discovery of one’s soul, purpose, & meaning. Religion and Spirituality Constantly full of controversy, especially within the scientific community. Science: religion and spirituality are destructive. General public: religion and spirituality are our only salvation. Are these two one and the same thing? Why/why not? Religio Spiritu n ality Re-defining Religion and Spirituality Religion Spirituality Context is formal, long- Personal search for a established institution/ relationship with the sacred (religious leaders, organization. symbols; values, vocations). Goal: discover and transform self, objects May not necessarily occur of significance within the context of a formal (relationships, personal institution/organization. success, purpose in life). Meaning doesn't just exist on its own, it's something we create and feel, and it's closely linked to motivation. Purpose is the cumulative effect of meaningful goals. Purpose is less tangible; we define purpose as a long-term aim or guiding principle based on meaning. It's the impact we want to have on the world. Finding and Creating Meaning of Life LOGOTHERAPY oLogotherapy, pioneered by Viktor Frankl means “therapy through meaning”. § It is founded on the belief that human nature is motivated by the search for a life purpose. Central themes of Logotherapy § Life has meaning, under all circumstances; § The will to meaning is the central motivation for living; § All have the freedom to find meaning in all that one thinks; and § All must integrate the body, mind, and spirit to be fully alive. Life’s Meaning Can Be Discovered By: § Creating a work or accomplishing some task; § Experiencing something or encountering someone; and § Adopting toward unavoidable suffering. Thank you!
