Grade 8 Lesson 4a Mordecai and Haman In this lesson we will learn about 2 people during the Persian captivity of the children of Israel. The people were still in captivity and were living away from their homeland. During our current time in our country this story is a great example of how we should live. 1. Esther 2:21, 22. During Ahasuerus’ reign, two of his chamberlains (people who worked in the palace) named Bigthan and Teresh, became angry and plotted to kill him. Mordecai, Esther’s uncle, heard about it and told Esther. Esther in turn told the King that Mordecai had found out this plot. It’s important to note that even though Ahasuerus was a king who kept the children of Israel in captivity that Mordecai still tried to save him. 2. Esther 2:23. After investigating the matter, the plot was found out and Bigthan and Teresh were hanged. Somehow the King forgot and Mordecai was not thanked. Sometimes when we do good things we are not rewarded. We should remember that our reward comes from God not from men. 3. Esther 3:1. Haman was an Agagite. He was advanced to become practically second in command to the king. However, he was also an enemy of the Jewish people. In this we can see that sometimes even though we honor God and care for our country and the things around us, still evil people may prosper. 4. Esther 3:2-5. Everyone reverenced Haman. Whenever he passed all the people bowed to him, with the exception of Mordecai. This made Haman furious. This shows us that sometimes when we stand for the things of God we will face persecution. 5. Esther 3:6-14. Haman was so upset at Mordecai, he was going to kill him. But instead of just killing him, he figured he should just destroy all of the Jews. This shows us that even though we are the children of God we will still face persecution. 6. Esther 3:15. The capital city at the time, Shushan, was troubled because of the decree of Haman to destroy the Jews. Sometime evil is so obvious even the unsaved can see it. 7. Esther 4:1-3. When Mordecai heard about this commandment and realized what had happened, he cried and mourned before the king. Also the rest of the Jews throughout the kingdom did the same thing. This shows us when evil is allowed in our country we need to cry and mourn for change. 8. Esther 4:5-16. Esther tried to stop Mordecai from mourning and crying. He then explained to her why he was doing it. He also told her that she needs to do something about it. She tried to explain that she could not but Mordecai told her she must. (Esther 4:14) This shows us that we are created with purpose. God has a plan for us, and we must do it. 9. Esther 5:1-4. Esther, after fasting and praying, went to the king. The king accepted her and she asked the king and Haman to a banquet. This shows us we must approach matters with prayer, preparation and wisdom, not with anger or impatience. 10. Esther 5:9-14. Haman was happy that he was being included with the king in this party. But he saw Mordecai and remembered his anger. He then went home and came up with a plan to get rid of Mordecai. We can see from this that evil will plot specifically against the children of God. Memory Verse Galatians 6:7,8
