Mark your key verse, John 2:22. Jesus’ public ministry was about to begin with His first sign at a wedding in Galilee when He changed the water to wine. His mother, Mary, was also there and witnessed that first miracle. sign/miracle (John 2:11) Strong’s #: G4592 Greek word: sēmeion Strong’s Definition: an indication, especially ceremonially or supernaturally Answer the following questions about the people, places, and events in this chapter. 1. What was the problem Jesus’ mother presented to Jesus? They had no wine/no more wine. 2. How did Jesus respond to his mother, Mary? AWV. He asked her what this had to do with Him and told her that His hour had not yet come. 3. What did Jesus tell the servants to do with the stone jars? Fill the waterpots/jars with water. 4. What did the servants do? They filled them up to the brim. 5. What did the water become? Wine 6. Did the master of the feast know where it had come from? No 7. What did the master say to the groom about the quality of the wine that was brought out? AWV. Usually the good wine is served first and then the lesser quality at the end, but you have saved the best wine until now. 8. How did this first sign manifest Jesus’ glory? AWV. This first sign demonstrated that Jesus has power over His creation. 9. Who believed in Him when they saw this sign? His disciples 10. What did Jesus do to the people selling animals and exchanging money at the temple? AWV. He made a whip of cords and drove them out. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers. 11. Record the two things in these verses that the disciples remembered. a. v. 17 AWV. It was written that He would have zeal for His Father’s house. b. vv. 19–22 AWV. He predicted that His body (temple) would be destroyed and raised in three days. 12. What two things did the disciples believe in verse 22? The Scripture and the word which/ that Jesus had spoken/said 13. Since a sign points to something and is not an end in itself, in what ways do the signs you found in chapter 2 point to Jesus, and what do they call us to believe about Him? AWV. Jesus demonstrated His deity and His power over His creation. He demonstrated He is the Son of God by cleansing the temple and, ultimately, through His resurrection from the dead. 32 Jesus, the Power of God • Unit 3, Lesson 1 EXP LOR E • U N I T 3 , L E S S O N 1 Read & Observe | Study Passage: John 2:1–25 | Memory Passage: Acts 10:36–38 Reread chapter 2 and underline any references to time phrases such as day, after this, and Passover. By looking at time phrases in a particular passage, we can learn about when events occurred. The timing of events holds significance in understanding the meaning of a passage. 1. What is the time phrase in verse 1? On/And the third day 2. Over how many days did John 1:19–51 take place? Four Scholars generally agree that the third day is referring to the third day after the prior four. This would make the day of the wedding the seventh day in John’s narrative. The seventh day is a symbol of perfection. God chose the seventh day of Jesus’ ministry for Him to manifest His glory by turning the water into wine. 3. What time phrase does Jesus use when His mother informs Him there is no wine? My/ mine hour 4. According to John 7:30 and 8:20, what do you think Jesus was referring to by using the time phrase, “my hour”? AWV. Jesus’ hour was His purpose for coming (His sacrificial death) which was to occur in God’s timing, not man’s. 5. According to John 13:1 and 17:1, what event do you think Jesus was referring to by using the time phrase, “hour”? AWV. Jesus knew that His hour had come that He was going to the cross to die for the sins of the world. 6. Who went with Jesus to Capernaum? His mother, His brothers/brethren and His disciples 7. How long did they stay there? A few days/not many days 8. What was about to take place in Jerusalem? The Passover The Passover was a memorial feast that the Jews celebrated every year in the spring. Attendance by all Jewish males was required. The Passover commemorated the Exodus, when God delivered Israel out of slavery in Egypt. At the first Passover, God instructed the people to apply the blood of the Passover lamb on their doorposts. When the Lord saw the blood, the lives of the firstborn were spared. During Passover, the city of Jerusalem was full of large numbers of worshipers who needed to purchase sacrificial lambs. The offering of a lamb was a shadow of Christ, our Passover lamb, who was sacrificed for us. (1 Cor. 5:7). John’s Gospel records three Passovers (John 2:13, 6:4, 12:1) which tells us that Jesus’ public ministry lasted approximately three years. Unit 3, Lesson 1 • Jesus, the Power of God 33 NAVI G AT E • U N IT 3 , L E S S O N 2 Read & Observe | Study Passage: John 2:1–25 | Memory Passage: John 2:18–22 BACKGROUND STUDY Culture: The Wedding Feast At the time of Jesus, it was the responsibility of families to arrange weddings. Acting on behalf of the groom, the friend of the bridegroom would negotiate the betrothal contract with the father of the bride one year prior to the ceremony. It was also customary for the father of the groom to offer a gift to the father of the bride as a dowry to compensate her family. • When it was time for the wedding, the groom dressed in his finest clothing and walked with his groomsmen through town to take his bride from her house to his. The bridesmaids helped the bride dress in beautiful clothing and regal jewelry, and she waited expectantly for her groom. Everyone along the route could hear the singing and rejoicing of the bridal party as their procession passed by. Once the couple arrived at the groom’s home, the wedding feast began. Delighted guests celebrated the newly married couple with singing, eating, and entertainment, while the bride and groom presided over the festivities under a canopy. The groom’s parents were responsible for hosting the week-long event. They had prepared large amounts of food and wine to accommodate their guests. Running out of either would have been extremely embarrassing at such an important celebration. The wedding guests expected nothing short of the family’s best. One of the absolute necessities for any grand occasion was the provision of large waterpots. Among many other things, Jewish law required water for regular hand washing and ritual purification. The pots were large to accommodate many guests. The transformation of water into wine at the wedding in Cana is a picture of the new covenant we have in Jesus through the shedding of His blood. He transforms our lives just as thoroughly as He changed the molecular structure of the water into that of a fine wine. Jesus made sure that the water filled the pots to the brim just like He fills our cups with newness of life when we believe. And the Word became flesh , and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory , glory as of the only Son from the Father , full of grace and truth . –John 1:14 (NASB) dwelt (John 1:14) Strong’s #: G4637 Greek word: skēnoō Strong’s Definition: to tent or encamp, i.e. (figuratively) to occupy (as a mansion) or (specially), to reside (as God did in the Tabernacle of old, a symbol of protection and communion) glory According to Easton’s Bible Dictionary Definition 4: The glorious moral attributes, the infinite perfections of God The children of Israel saw the visible manifestation of the glory of God in the cloud that led them through the wilderness. Later, God’s glory was visible in the tabernacle above the Ark of the Covenant (Ex. 40:34–38) and also in the permanent temple Solomon constructed. God’s glory departed that temple before Babylon destroyed Jerusalem. Even though Zerubbabel rebuilt the temple, which was expanded under Herod, the visible manifestation of God’s glory did not return to the temple in Jerusalem until it came in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, when He came and dwelt among men. Singing hymns based in Scripture cultivates an atmosphere of worship and love toward the Lord our God. They encourage faith, hope, and healing, while at the same time, reveal God’s holiness and power. We humble ourselves in repentance, loving and worshiping God with our heart, soul, and mind. Then, as we sing together in the unity of corporate worship, we experience the fulfillment of the second greatest commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:39) with fellow believers in Christ. • Read each of the “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” stanzas below, and match its theology with the correct passage, using the highlighted words as clues. Edward Perronet was a son of an Anglican priest, and he worked closely with John and Charles Wesley for many years during England’s eighteenth century revival. Besides publishing three volumes of Christian poems, Perronet was also a minister of the gospel. When John Wesley asked him to preach, Perronet would decline as he was uneasy to preach in front of Wesley. On one occasion, John Wesley announced to the crowd that Brother Perronet was bringing the sermon. Perronet went to the pulpit and declared that he would deliver the greatest sermon ever preached. He read Christ’s Sermon on the Mount and immediately sat down. Edward Perronet (1721-1792) Shortly before he died on January 2, 1792, he uttered his final words, “Glory to God in the height of His divinity! Glory to God in the depth of his humanity! Glory to God in His all-sufficiency! Into His hands I commend my spirit.”1 Edward Perronet’s legacy lives on for “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” is known as the National Anthem of Christianity around the world. Unit 3, Lesson 5 • Jesus, the Power of God 41 History and Geography: Region of Galilee Galilee, the area where Jesus spent most of His life and ministry, had been part of the northern tribes of Israel who were taken into exile by the Assyrians in 722 BC. The Israelites assimilated into the culture of their captors, and when their descendants began repopulating Galilee about 600 years later, most of them were of ethnically mixed origins and practiced a diluted Jewish religion. Therefore, the stricter Jews from Jerusalem in Judea looked down on the Galileans. The Galileans also spoke with a distinguishing accent (Mark 14:70). In addition, Galilee and Jerusalem were separated geographically by the area of Samaria. Because of the animosity, many Jews who journeyed between Jerusalem and Galilee traveled a sliver of land on the west side of the Jordan River, which was not part of Samaria. Upper Galilee boasts the highest elevations in the Holy Land, but Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth in Lower Galilee was characterized by fertile agricultural plains. Therefore, it is easy to understand why many of Jesus’ parables and stories included elements related to farming. All twelve of Jesus’ disciples were from Galilee, and some of them lived near the Sea of Galilee. In addition, much of Jesus’ teaching and working of miracles was done in the area of Galilee. Using the article above and these cross-references, complete the map work to learn about Jesus’ ministry in Galilee.
