Begin with ‘I will…’ Combating Negative Bias Some level of worry and concern is natural, but an overwhelming amount of negative thoughts about yourself, including doubt in your abilities and place in school, can impede your learning and stifle your success. You can develop strategies to recognize and overcome these feelings. Part of being a Successful Student Combating Negative Bias ● Be aware of any negative bias. ● Focus on the positive before you begin. ● Purposefully focus on successes. ● Keep a gratitude and accomplishment journal. Fixed vs. Growth Mindset The researchbased model of these two mindsets by Carol Dweck. Questions to consider: ● What is a growth mindset, and how does it affect my learning? ● What are performance goals versus learning goals? GRIT by Angela Duckworth Resilience and Grit Grit can be defined as personal perseverance toward a task or goal. In a 2007 study Angela Duckworth and colleagues found that individuals with high grit were able to maintain motivation in learning tasks despite failures. The first step in applying grit is to adopt an attitude that looks directly to the end goal as the only acceptable outcome. Keeping Grit in mind: Growth Your propensity to seek and consider new ideas, additional alternatives, different approaches, and fresh perspectives Resilien ce Your capacity to respond to constructively and ideally make use of all kinds of adversity Instinct Your gut-level capacity to pursue the right goals in the best and smartest ways Tenacity The degree to which you persist, commit to, stick with, and go after whatever you choose to achieve Do YOU have GRIT? What was your score? How do you get Grit? 1. Pursue what interests you. Personal interest is a great motivator! 2. Practice until you can do it, and then keep practicing. 3. Find a purpose in what you do. 4. Have hope in what you are doing. 5. Surround yourself with gritty people Can you find a GRIT buddy in the class? History of a Liberal Arts Education | Liberal Arts Coll ege Review A liberal arts education also takes root in the Socratic Method, named after the famous Greek philosopher Socrates. Socrates used a unique method of teaching in a question and dialogue format that challenged students to support their arguments and to stimulate critical thinking. This style of teaching is very different from large public universities which primarily engage in passive learning through lecture. Liberal arts education often emphasize critical thinking, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning. How does this approach foster skills that are essential for success in a rapidly changing world and job What Are the Rewards and Value of a College Degree?
