LESSON 3 FRIENDSHIP Objectives Identify the positive effects of good friendship. Infer that friendship helps shape a strong sense of identity, develop character, and promote peaceful relationships with others, as it is formed out of a genuine desire to connect through love. Demonstrate ways to strengthen friendships. What can you notice? WHAT IS A FRIEND? A person who you know well and who you like a lot, but who is usually not a member of your family. (Cambridge Dictionary) According to Aristotle, a friend is our “second self”: a person who is close to us and reflects our goodness. Three Types of Friendship According to Aristotle OF OF OF UTILITY PLEASURE VIRTUE Friendship of Utility A friendship based on benefit for each other (mutual benefit). Practical but temporary or not permanent. Friendship of Utility Example: Anna and Jake are classmates who help each other with schoolwork. Anna is good at math and tutors Jake, while Jake helps Anna with her science projects. Their friendship lasts as long as they benefit from each other, but they don’t stay close after the school year ends Friendship of Pleasure A friendship based on happiness or enjoyment felt when being together. People form these friendships because they find happiness in each other's company, whether through hobbies, entertainment, or common activities. Temporary Friendship of Pleasure Example: Lily and Sam love hanging out because they share a passion for video games. They spend hours playing and laughing together, but their bond is mostly about fun. If they lose interest in gaming, their friendship may fade. Friendship of Virtue A friendship based on goodness, respect, trust, and appreciation. Long-lasting and the strongest type of friendship. “Perfect Friendship” Friendship of Virtue Example: Emma and Sophia have been best friends for years. They support each other through challenges, celebrate each other's successes, and offer honest advice. Their friendship is built on trust, respect, and genuine care, making it deep and lifelong.
