He readily treated both wealthy patrons who could afford his services and those struggling financially. His compassion shone through as he used his knowledge of local medicinal plants to create affordable treatments for the less fortunate. He understood the limitations of the people and didn't burden them with high fees, even accepting alternative forms of payment to ensure everyone had access to the healthcare they needed. A Man of Science and Education: Rizal's thirst for knowledge continued in Dapitan. He conducted scientific research, collecting animal and plant specimens that he sent to European museums in exchange for scientific materials. Instead, he came up with a different plan for freedom. He knew there was a disease outbreak in Cuba, a Spanish colony. Rizal offered to be a doctor there, using his medical skills to help people. He hoped that by being helpful, the Spanish would finally let him leave Dapitan. After a long wait, the Spanish finally agreed to Rizal's request in 1896.
