THIS DEVELOPMENT IS THE TIME WHEN THEY RELATE MORE TO PEOPLE LIKE PEERS, FAMILY SCHOOL, WORK AND THE COMMUNITY. Peers are the important source of emotional support PEERS as the person struggles to establish his/her identity and overcome confusions. IF ONE IS REJECTED HE/SHE MAY ENGAGE IN DELINQUENT BEHAVIORS. SCHOOL IS STUDENTS’ SECOND HOME. SCHOOL It is a critical setting for adolescents because this is where friendship starts to develop and it gives opportunity to develop cognitive skills.. A community is a unified body of individuals who live in the same area such as city, town or neighborhood. Socioeconomic status – employment, education Type of resources available – childcare, medical resources, employment opportunities Service systems – schools, police stations COMMUNITY Religious organizations Media People who live in the community Studies show that if the person lives in a neighborhood with high socio-economic status, academic achievement will improve and school drop-outs will be lessened. And if the person lives in a neighborhood with low socioeconomic status, COMMUNITY delinquent/criminal behaviors will likely to be performed by teenagers. ERIK ERIKSON'S PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT THEORY. IDENTITY This is when the VS. teenager is confused between a ROLE CONFUSION sense of who they are and who they want to be. Risk taking behaviors manifested in adolescent rebellion can be in the forms of following: Early pregnancy and STI School failure/ dropping out Alcohol/ drug abuse Crime, delinquency and violence This is the process of social influence that can take on many forms: Conformity - can be influenced by another person to follow their actions or thoughts. Compliance - changing one’s behavior SOCIAL as a result of other people asking for the change Obedience - a change in a behavior INFLUENCE at the command of an authority figure LESSON 11 FAMILY STRUCTURES & LEGACIES It is the basic unit of society. Parents provide the values that are important for FAMILY their children to learn as future citizens. The development of the child’s behavior is indicative of how well the family functions. It is very important in the development ATTACHMENT of the infant especially during the first 6 months of his/her life. Mary Ainsworth had an experiment related to attachment wherein the infant was exposed to a series of leave-takings and returns of the mother and a stranger. “The Strange Situation” From Ainsworth’s Experiment 4 ATTACHMENT STYLES: Those who are avoidant tend to have frequent superficial and Secure short-lived relationships with Avoidant different partners. Authoritarian- when the parent is excessively concerned with rules. 2. Authoritative- when the parents both have firm limits on their children’s behavior with love, affection and warmth. 3. Permissive- they give very few rules or demands to their children, it can either be neglectful or indulgent. Permissive neglectful- they ignore their children and allow them to do whatever they want. Permissive indulgent- parents are those that are too involved with their children.
