Source of energy. Functions of the Skeletal System MOVEMENT Our skeleton consists of joints and allows for muscle attachment which creates movement. Ligaments are strong straps that attach bone to bone Tendons are strong straps that attach muscle to bone The movement of the skeleton allows athletes to perform the skills needed to participate in a sport. Athletes require the following movements Adduction Abduction Flexion Rotation Extension Movement also allows people to do every day tasks e.g. Functions of the Skeletal System PROTECTION Certain bones in our bodies protect vital organs in sport and in everyday life. Cranium protects the brain Vertebral column protects the spinal chord Ribs protect internal organs such as heart and lungs The pelvis protects a women's uterus Can you think of an example in sport where protection is vital ? Functions of the Skeletal System SUPPORT & SHAPE What would happen to us if we didn’t have bones? We are able to stand, sit upright, lying down and support our body in different positions Helps us to perform certain skills in sports e.g. handstand How does support help us in everyday life? Functions of the Skeletal System Blood Production What would happen to us if we unable to produce blood? We are able to function because bone marrow allows for the production of the different blood cells. Functions of the Skeletal System Fat Storage Bones also serve as a site for fat storage and blood cell production. The unique connective tissue that fills the interior of most bones is referred to as bone marrow. There are two types of bone marrow: yellow bone marrow and red bone marrow. Yellow bone marrow contains fat tissue that can be released to serve as a source of energy for other tissues of the body.
