**Lesson 1 -- What Do Psychologists Do?** **Activity \#2: Psychologists at Work** The following table lists some specialties (or subfields) within the field of psychology, as well as some of the typical activities for each. **Subfield of Psychology Typical Activities** Clinical Psychology Providing therapy, researching, teaching, writing, and helping people with behavioural or mental disorders. -------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Counselling Psychology Helping people with problems pertaining to everyday life, such as marital problems, school problems, and family crises. Educational Psychology Teaching, and researching teaching/learning in educational systems. School Psychology Testing and diagnosing gifted students as well as those with learning disabilities, mostly in the school setting. Social Psychology Teaching and researching social influences on individuals. Cognitive Psychology Researching human information processing, such as perception, language and memory. Developmental Psychology Studying human development from conception to death. Physiological Psychology Examining biological approaches to psychology. Forensic Psychology Involving the legal system, including policing, courts and prisons. Sports Psychology Applying principles to athletic activity and exercise. Personality Psychology Focusing on the traits that differentiate one person from another. Below are some examples of issues that a psychologist would address. Use the table to help you choose the correct subfield of psychology and write your answer in the space provided. Sometimes there will be more than one answer; choose the one that you think is the best answer.
