Lecture 8 Political Sociology- the study of power, politics, nations, micro/macro social movements There are ways to have power or authority, without having the other. The power debate ( Mills and Lukes) -​ After WWII, people started talking about how power can control people in hidden ways -​ Facist Govt- strict control -​ Totalitarian- complete control The Power Elite- C Wright Mills (Power in the U.S. is concentrated in a small group of elites) Military-industrial-political complex include: -​ The military -​ Private corporations -​ The government Steven Lukes Power ( 3 Dimension of Power) First Dimension- who makes decisions and handles conflicts. Second Dimension- who controls what gets talked about (agenda-setting). Third Dimension- shaping people's perceptions Revolving Door: Elites move between powerful positions (e.g., military to government). Power- Ability to make people do something, even don’t want to Authority- Power that people see as legitimate and willingly follow Weber on Authority ( Authority is key for the state to exist, it becomes domination when people think it’s unfair) Weber on State ( A government system that controls a specific area and has the legal right to use force, 3 types authority) Traditional Authority- customs/traditions, always been this way Legal-Rational Authority- power is laws and rules, authority is position Charismatic Authority- people look up to leader ( cult leader etc..) Foucault on Disciplinary Power ( power in society is not physical, watching, judging, testing, 3 ways power works) Disciplinary Power- A way to control people by watching and monitoring them, not forcing them Hierarchical Observation- behave because they know they might be watched. Normalizing Judgment- setting standards of normal behaviur, punish if don’t follow Examinations- testing and ranking people to classify them
