Cariology is the study of Dental Caries and Cariogenesis (mechanism of Caries Production). Shubha Nanda DMD 7 November 2024 History 1. 1) Tooth worm theory- -some claim 5000BC to 1700-early 1900s depending on the geographic location 2) Keyes Triad of Dental Caries 1963 3) Infectious and transmissible disease The treatment being chemicals or excision by drilling 4) Dental caries has shifted from being considered transmissible and infectious to CURRENT an ecological and non-communicable disease. Shubha Nanda DMD 8 November 2024 What is Dental Caries? Dental Caries is a biofilm mediated – diet modulated process that can lead to an imbalance in the cycle of demineralization and remineralization causing localized destruction of tooth structure Shubha Nanda DMD 9 November 2024 Dental Caries is… a biofilm mediated – diet modulated process that can lead to an imbalance in the cycle of demineralization and remineralization causing localized destruction of tooth structure Biofilms mediated: microscopic Diet modulated: in the presence of sugars, communities of bacteria and slimy the bacteria can produce acid thereby matrix lowering the pH Extended low pH = Microbiome in dysbiosis Shubha Nanda DMD 10 November 2024 Dental Caries is… a biofilm mediated – diet modulated process that can lead to an imbalance in the cycle of demineralization and remineralization causing localized destruction of tooth structure Shubha Nanda DMD 11 November 2024 Dental Caries is… a biofilm mediated – diet modulated process that can lead to an imbalance in the cycle of demineralization and remineralization causing localized destruction of tooth structure Shubha Nanda DMD 12 November 2024 Tooth Death Spiral Shubha Nanda DMD 13 November 2024 CariesCare 4D Cycle Shubha Nanda DMD 14 November 2024 CariesCare 4D Cycle – Aims and Guidelines AIMS 4 Ds To prevent new caries Determine To prevent caries progression Detect To preserve tooth structure Decide To manage caries risk Do Shubha Nanda DMD 15 November 2024 1st D: Determine Determine Patient Level Caries Risk Shubha Nanda DMD 16 November 2024 2nd D: Detect Detect and Assess the Caries Staging and Grading of Caries Shubha Nanda DMD 17 November 2024 3rd D: Decide Decide the Personalized Care Plan at Patient and Tooth Level Shubha Nanda DMD 18 November 2024 4th D: Do Prevention and Management of Cavitated and Non-cavitated Lesions Shubha Nanda DMD 19 November 2024 CariesCare 4D Cycle https://cariescareinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/CCI-Practice-Guide.pdf Martignon S, et al.
