LEADERSHIP, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK KNOWLEDGE CHECK INTERSECTIONALITY A theory that seeks to examine the ways socially and culturally constructed categories interact on multiple levels to manifest themselves as inequality in society. Most people identify with multiple dimensions of diversity. Intersectionality can help leaders to avoid viewing social problems as separate challenges facing specific groups in mutually exclusive ways. Rather, intersectionality can help to support inclusion in natural variations among multiple continuums. Inclusive leadership Inclusion is a continuous process that invites, welcomes, and celebrates all community members’ participation. Language Language bridges all the levels of leadership. Language must be considered by inclusive leaders. In addition to communicating, language shapes the way people perceive and experience the world. Guidelines for using respectful and inclusive language: Ask and listen (don’t assume) Honour self-identification Be specific and de-categorize Consider the person first Language Examples of inclusive language guidelines: Disabled person -> Person with a disability Person confined to a wheelchair -> Person that ues a wheelchair If a leader works hard, he will succeed -> If a leader works hard, they will succeed Laura, our female leader -> Laura, our leader Normal people -> People without disabilities Mothers bake cookies for the fundraiser -> Families bake cookies for the fundraiser Table 5.1 on page 82 of the textbook HOME ABOUT US BLOG UPCOMING ELIAS CONTACT COMMUNITY CENTER ABOUT US Welcome to the Elias Community Center, a place where everyone is welcome and can find something they love! HOME ABOUT US BLOG UPCOMING ELIAS CONTACT COMMUNITY CENTER BLOG: HULA HOOP Last week, the Elias Community Center hosted its much-anticipated Hula Hoop Class, and it was a resounding success! Participants from all walks of life came together to spin, twirl, and groove in an environment that celebrated inclusivity and fun. We are thrilled to share the highlights of this fantastic event. We had participants ranging from young children to older adults, all embracing the joy of hula hooping. It was heartwarming to see people of all ages and abilities coming together, celebrating their unique strengths and having a great time. A variety of hula hoops were available to suit different needs and preferences. From larger hoops for beginners to weighted hoops for those looking for an extra challenge, everyone found the perfect fit. The class began with a gentle warm-up to get everyone ready and ended with a relaxing cool-down to help unwind. These sessions ensured that everyone, regardless of their fitness level, could participate comfortably. Participants learned a variety of hula hoop tricks and techniques, from basic spins to more advanced moves. Our instructors guided everyone step by step, making sure the class was accessible and fun for all. Some testimonials: Jeffy: “I loved the inclusive nature of the hula hoop class! As someone with limited mobility, I appreciated the modifications and support provided by the instructors.” Alyson: “The hula hoop class was the highlight of my week. It was a great workout, and I made so many new friends. The instructors created such a welcoming environment for everyone.” We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the Hula Hoop Class. Your enthusiasm and participation made it a truly special event. We can't wait to see you at our future classes and events! Micro level The inclusion lens The inclusion lens is an analytical tool that can help leaders to facilitate inclusion across multiple levels of service. The inclusion lens aids us in asking questions about how we are applying diversity and inclusion concepts in our leadership role. Using the inclusion lens tool can help leaders to identify areas in which change can be made to ensure that all community members are welcomed and included. The inclusion lens Examples of inclusion lens questions: Can all people approach, enter, and use the facilities, programs, and services? Is our language accurate, sensitive, and positive? Is everyone invited? Do we train our staff on diversity and inclusion? Do our policies or practices unintentionally discriminate or exclude? Do we have an inclusive registration process? Do we provide accommodations for successful participation by all people? You are developing a program, service, or class. When considering the conclusion lens, what are some questions that you could ask and how would they guide your development?
