Atoms and Elements make up matter Lesson 1 – Year 8 Chemistry Success criteria define element, monatomic, diatomic and periodic table describe the key features of the periodic table, including periods and groups list the first 20 elements of the periodic table relate the atomic number and mass number of an element to the number of subatomic particles. What is stuff made from? The atom is the smallest particle of matter. It cannot be created or destroyed or broken down further. What are elements? An element is a pure substance that it only made of one type of atom. There are around 90 naturally occurring elements and about another 20 that have been artificially created. Molecules A molecule is a group of two or more atoms bonded together Mono – one Monoatomi Di – two c vs Diatomic Monoatomic – consisting of a single atom Diatomic – a molecule that is made from two atoms The Periodic Table – An organisation tool for elements Arranges all of the elements based on the SIZE of the atoms. All elements represented by their symbol. Number of protons The average mass of atoms of that element Elements – Metals and Non-metals METALS NON-METALS Usually solid at room temperature. As a solid, Most nonmetals are gas at room metals are held in a lattice: temperature Good conductors (heat and electricity pass Bad conductors (heat and electricity cannot through easily) pass through easily) Ductile Non-Ductile Malleable Brittle Generally shiny Generally dull First 20 Elements – As part of this unit, you must memorise the first 20 elements and their symbols https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGid34_Lss0 Write down the full names of each element according to their atomic number
