The UAE at 25 Years (1996) and 50 Years (2021) Sheikh Zayed’s promise of using oil revenues of Abu Dhabi to develop the nation led to: ✓ Modern Infrastructure o UAE developed world-class hospitals, schools, universities, roads, ports, and airports. ✓ Diversified Economy o Transitioned from oil dependency to a thriving industrial sector. ✓ Improved Health and Quality of Life o Life expectancy increased to over 75, which is on par with advanced countries. o Diseases like malaria eradicated. ✓ Conquered Illiteracy o Efforts included building schools and teaching older generations who missed out on formal education. o High focus on education empowered Emirati men and women to play active roles in society. Rising sea level due to global warming and increased temperatures would cause enormous damage. ✓ Sheikh Zayed gave orders to stop burning gas in Abu Dhabi's oilfields (late 1990s). ✓ Today, UAE is a world leader in renewable energy, e.g. solar power or wind energy. Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, was formed in 2006 and leads in research on renewable energy. ✓ UAE’s oil deposits can continue producing at the same rate for 100 more years. However, UAE is planning for a future beyond oil to aid in global sustainability. Sheikh Zayed and the Environment, his Death and New Leaders ✓ Sheikh Zayed helped protect wildlife by introducing UAE’s first Hunting Laws. He also led global falcon conservation campaigns. In 1996, the Environmental Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) was established. ✓ On 2nd November 2004, Sheikh Zayed passed away after serving as President for 33 years and as Ruler of Abu Dhabi for 38 years. ✓ Crown Prince Sheikh Khalifa succeeded his father as President and the Ruler of Abu Dhabi.
