Unit 5 review: andrew Jackson 1. During John Quincy Adams’ presidency, which region of the country saw the most benefits from the “American System” (high tariffs in return for internal improvements)? The North (got railroads, Erie Canal, etc) 2. What was unique about the Election of 1824? The House of Representatives had to determine the winner of the election because Jackson won the popular vote, but not the electoral vote. 3. What was the “Corrupt Bargain”? JQA got Henry Clay to convince the House of Representatives to vote for him for president in the Election of 1824. JQA then made Henry Clay his Secretary of State. 4. What political party was Andrew Jackson in? Democrat 5. What event made Andrew Jackson a national hero? Battle of New Orleans 6. What is “Jacksonian Democracy”? A movement for more democracy in American government, focus on the “common man” 7. Why did Andrew Jackson oppose the Second Bank of the United States (National Bank)? He believed it only benefited the wealthy and not the common man 8. What was the “Tariff of Abominations”? Tariffs of 1828 and 1832. 45% tax increase on imported goods. a. What state nullified the tariffs? South Carolina b. How did Jackson respond? He sided with the federal government. He believed South Carolina was in the wrong and could not nullify a law just because they disagreed with it. 9. Define sectionalism. The idea that a region of a country is more important than the country as a whole. Causes tension and division within a country. (North vs. South) a. How did the Tariff of Abominations in 1828 increase sectionalism? The tariff only benefited the North, so the South hated the tariff.
