Interactionists study how people from the same and different social classes or stratifications interact. For example, people who work in the same company with the same position and salary grade may be casual or friendly with each other. If these employees interact with their bosses, they may interact more formally. The interactionist perspective may also see various degrees of interaction with the employe's subordinates such as the janitor or maintenance staff. People who share the same background, education. income level and/or position tend to associate themselves with each other. Systems of Stratification Various systems of stratification have been modeled throughout history, and they are usually based on the economic, political, and social status of an individual or family. These systems can be classified as closed or open, and they are dependent on the social mobility of the people. Social mobility is the shift in social status or rank by virtue of marriage or other meritorious work. In a closed system, social class is ascribed-it is attained through one's birth and does not shift to another status--thus, trapping the people in the system for the rest of their life. In an open system, classes or stratification is institutionalized, but people can shift classes thru acquisition of wealth or other work; thus, social status is achieved rather than ascribed. There are also no clear guidelines or class consciousness among people belonging to various social classes. In open system, social mobility is possible and occurs frequently. Caste System In India, the caste system is based on Hindu belief and culture and on people's kharma (work) and dharma (duty). The system is divided into four classes: Brahmins (the priests), Kshatriya (warriors and nobles), Vaishya (merchants and landowners), and Shudra (commoners and peasants). Outside the system are the Dalits or the untouchables, who are considered outcasts and impure. The caste system has existed for over 3 000 years. and it formed the basis of Hindu religious and social life. Although the constitution of India prohibited segregation, especially of the Dalits or untouchables, it is still evident in the rural areas of India even up to this day. For example, the upper caste can be seen living in a rural
