WHAT DOES SCIENCE MEAN TO YOU? SCIENCE WHAT IS SCIENCE? SCIENCE SCIENTIA Latin - Knowledge Field of human knowledge concerned with facts that are explained logically by principles to understand events in the natural world. SCIENCE SCIENCE can be defined as... Intellectual Idea Social Activity Activity SCIENCE BRANCHES OF SCIENCE SCIENCE Natural Science Social Science Biological Science Psychology Physical Science Sociology Earth Science These branches of science can intertwined. SCIENCE FURTHER DEFINITION OF SCIENCE Science involves more than the gaining of knowledge. It is the systematic and organized inquiry into the natural world and its phenomena. Science is about gaining a deeper and often useful understanding of the natural world.” - from the Multicultural History of Science at Vanderbilt University SCIENCE WHAT IS SCIENTIFIC METHOD? Involves a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural Communicate the Results occurence to objectively establish facts. Conclusion Collect and Analyze Results Experiment Formulate a Hypothesis Observation Scientific Method is the Backbone of Science SCIENCE 1. Observation Observation based on senses or tools. Observation of natural events usually raise a question. SCIENCE 2. Formulate a Hypothesis A hypothesis is formed to explain your observation or answer your question. Hypothesis is usually stated in an “If.....Then” statement. HYPOTHESIS MUST BE TESTABLE! SCIENCE 3. Experiment Test the hypothesis. Controlled experiment are used to test the hypothesis. ⚬ Control Group vs Experiment Group SCIENCE Variable Independent Dependent The variable The variable being that changed in responds to the the changed experiment. indepdendent variable. SCIENCE 4. Collect and Analyze Results Data collected from experiments. Data is defined as the recorded observations or measurement. ⚬ Qualitative - Description ⚬ Quantitative - Number Data SCIENCE 5. Draw Conclusions Decision process whether the results of the experiment support the hypothesis. When the hypothesis is not supported by the test, the scientist must find another explanation for what they observed. NO EXPERIMENT IS A FAILURE: All experiments are observation of real-life events. SCIENCE 6. Communicate the Results Results must be communicated in the form of a presentation or a written document. Communication helps other scientists performing the same experiment to see if the results of your experiment are the same as their results. ⚬ Helps people to see if the results are repeatable. TECHNOLOGY WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY? TECHNOLOGY Teknologia Greek - Systematic Treatment Tekhnē logia Greek - Art/Craft Greek - Study TECHNOLOGY WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY? It is a material product, the results of a scientific investigation. It is the application of scientific expertise, laws and principles to the development of services, products, instruments and machines built to solve real problems. TECHNOLOGY SIX MAIN TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY Mechanical Medical Technology Technology Communications Industrial Technology Technology Electronics Manufacturing Technology Technology SOCIETY WHAT IS SOCIETY? SOCIETY SOCIETAS Latin - individuals belonging to a particular group SOCIETY WHAT IS SOCIETY? A broad social grouping occupying the same geographical or social territory, normally subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. SOCIETY WHAT IS SOCIETY? A complex of mutual relationship classes, communicating with each other. Society allows human organisms to carry on their life activities and helping each person. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY WHAT IS SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY? It is a field interested in the nature of science and its place in society. SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY STS ASKS THESE QUESTIONS How does Science work? How can we understand scientific controversies? How have scientific research ethics evolved, and what ethical issues are now being contested? How do societies and governments allocate resources for scientific research and science- based policies? How are scientific knowledge and practice affected by economic, political, religious, or philosophical currents in a given time and place?
