Introduction to Psychology: PSY100 AUA-CAS PRESENTER: MS. NAVIDA EDWARDS MEMORY Memory So class, how many red cars were there? It is important to first focus our attention. Now, what happen if I asked the question before showing the image again? Do you think this changes the outcome? Why? Why not? Memory How do you remember what you remember? When you pay attention to information how is it stored? Think of a computer and how we input data, store it and retrieve the information, is similar to how our memory works. Memory is an information processing system. Take for example the image shown earlier. Your attention had to be focused first before you were able to process the information. Memory Encoding- this refers to how we get information into our brains. automatic processing effortful processing Memory Types of encoding Visual(Mental) –Picture images Acoustic- Sounds Semantic-Encoding meaning through words Memory The premise of memory is the ability to retrieve it for use. Imagine you are preparing for a test, and on the day of the exam you cannot remember anything you studied. Whereas, your best friend who has been using maybe music, or something pleasant is just moving through the paper with ease. How can she remember the information and you cannot? Parts of the Brain Involved with Memory Problems with Memory When areas of the brain are affected they present issues with memory, where one suffers memory loss. Let us look at the case of Clive Wearing. In March of 1985, Clive Wearing, an English musician and musicologist, was struck by a brain infection as the result of a herpes encephalitis affecting the parts of his brain concerned with memory.
