It encompasses all cropping sequences practiced over space and time based on the available technologies of crop production (Table 7.1). Cropping systems have been traditionally structured to maximize crop yields. Now, there is a strong need to design cropping systems which take into consideration the emerging social, economical, and ecological or environmental concerns (H. Blanco, R. Lal., 2010). All activities concerning plants and animals are related to Agriculture. The agricultural sector serve as a supplier of raw materials needed by the industries. The raw material help the industries in carrying out of their activities. Example: the sugar is needed in the manufacturing of consumer products like produced juice and chocolate drinks comes from the agricultural sector. Involving about 50% of Filipino workers, it contributes an average of 22% to the Gross Domestic Product. This output comes mainly from agribusiness, which in turn accounts for about 70 percent of the total agricultural output. And about 1/3 income derived comes from agriculture --- traders, processors, retailers, and other groups. The main agricultural enterprise is crop cultivation. Others are chicken broiler production, including operation of chicken hatcheries (20.4 percent), agricultural services (19.8 percent), and hog farming (18.4 percent) (A report based on fao.org). Agricultural literacy revolves around the ability to think critically and make value judgments about the impact of agriculture as an economic and environmental activity and the concurrent societal and political pressures that result from those judgments (Powell, D. et. al, 2008) Agriculturally literate people are able to understand and possess basic knowledge of the agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resource systems. They are also able to communicate the value of agriculture and identify issues related to agriculture. People are unaware of career opportunities When you ask people what they think of when they hear the word agriculture, farming tends to come to mind. Many people (especially students) don’t always think of agricultural careers in business, science, engineering, food production, and so much more. We need agricultural education to show students new career. There are misconceptions about agriculture We all know that there are misconceptions about GMOs being bad, farmers using too many chemicals, “factory” farms being inhumane, agriculture’s role in climate change, and more. Agricultural education programs teach students the truth behind these misconceptions and continued agricultural literacy efforts reach others to tell them current information about new technologies and misconceptions. Agriculture is important to learn about In general, agriculture is important to learn about simply because people should know where their food comes from. If you start talking to people, some of them will tell you that food comes from the grocery store. This might be where they obtained their food items, but they don’t know the processes that it took to bring their food from the farm to the grocery store. We need to protect food security Without people who understand the food production system, our food system is in jeopardy. We need people to advocate for agriculture, enact policy, and be educated consumers. If people who are not agriculturally literate are making changes to the food system through policy and with their votes, food security is at risk. It creates educated consumers At the grocery store, consumers are faced with a multitude of choices. To buy organic or conventionally farmed? What does the “hormone free” label on my meat mean? People go to the grocery store and buy food, but they can’t explain why they are buying the products that they are beyond basic reasons like price point. Consumers should know the basics of food labeling and the impact that different food production methods have, and be able to make an educated decision on what is right for themselves and their families. Economically important Agriculture is vital to a strong economy. Today, agriculture is responsible for over $8.6 trillion — or nearly 20 percent — of the United States’ economic activity, with agriculture directly supporting nearly 23 million jobs (which is 15 percent of U.S. employment). With agriculture playing such a big role in our economy today, people should have a basic understanding of the value that agriculture brings to the table. Basic life skills Farm kids and people who have grown up in agriculture are arguably well ahead of others their age when it comes to life skills (that’s just one reason that FFA and 4-H are so popular). Agriculture and agricultural education provide many life lessons like discipline, compassion and responsibility, as well as practical life skills like public speaking, how to prepare food, operating heavy machinery and so much more. The life lessons and skills to be gained from agriculture are almost infinite! Aging agricultural sector The agriculture industry is aging. The average age of a farmer is 57.5 years old and this number keeps increasing. As older farmers retire, we need to make sure that the next generation is prepared to take on the important role of providing food and other agricultural products to a growing population. Agriculture has a big impact on quality of life Without agriculture, we wouldn’t have tires, houses, clothing, books, cosmetics, footballs, medicines, and more. Agriculture provides our food, fiber, lumber, and many byproducts that are used to create items we use every day. Almost everything we eat, wear, and use comes from a plant or animal. Agriculture has a big impact on quality of life, and agricultural education is important to ensure people have a basic understanding of this. An environment is generally defined as the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal or plant survives or operates. From this, it must be relatively easy for one to comprehend its importance in the famed cycle of life. This problem has surfaced in the last few decades. Greenhouse gases are the major cause of climate change. Environmental changes have several destructive impacts such as the melting of glaciers, change in seasons, epidemics, etc. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Global Warming The burning of fossil fuels, emissions from automobiles and chlorofluorocarbons add to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This has led to an increase in the earth’s temperature causing environmental changes. This increase in temperature across the globe is known as global warming. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Ozone Layer Depletion The ozone layer is a layer of concentrated ozone gas. It protects us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. This very important layer is being destroyed by CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), which are used in industries and everyday life (e.g. aerosol cans). The chlorine in these compounds destroys the ozone layer. The hole in the ozone layer leaves humans and wildlife exposed to harmful UV rays resulting in several skin diseases including cancer. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Water Pollution The introduction of harmful substances into rivers, oceans, lakes and ponds, which changes the physical, chemical or biological condition of the water is called water pollution. The polluted water lacks oxygen and therefore the organisms die. Water is the main source of life and therefore it is our prime duty to prevent it from any kind of pollution. The gaseous emissions have added to an increase in the temperature of the earth. Not only this, but it had also increased the risk of diseases among individuals. It is estimated to be more than seven billion. The increasing population has led to a shortage of resources. If this continues, it will be very difficult to sustain such a huge population. The other environmental issues including pollution, waste management, deforestation, climate change and global warming are all associated with overpopulation. The trees provide us with oxygen, and several raw materials and also maintain the temperature of the earth. Due to the depletion of trees for commercial purposes, there has been a drastic change in the earth’s climate. Forests are an abode to a large number of wild animals and plants. Destruction of forests has led to the elimination of a large number of plants and animal species affecting biodiversity. These factors contribute to the different food safety challenges faced by the country. They are considered when establishing health risks that concern food safety AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FACTORS AFFECTING FOOD SAFETY IN THE PHILIPPINES Contaminants and pathogens that cause foodborne diseases may be naturally occurring in the environment or introduced in the food chain as a result of processing and human activities. The climate of the Philippines can also bring about several factors that can affect food safety. The ambient temperature range in the Philippines (25.5°C to 28.3°C) is within the temperature danger zone for food storage (4.44°C to 60°C) which is conducive to the log phase of growth of bacterial pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli and Campylobacter. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FACTORS AFFECTING FOOD SAFETY IN THE PHILIPPINES AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FACTORS AFFECTING FOOD SAFETY IN THE PHILIPPINES The high relative humidity and heavy rainfall in the Philippines require local food processing businesses to maintain microorganism-inhibiting storage conditions and measures since the presence of moisture in food processing equipment or storage areas may accelerate the growth of spoilage microorganisms. Consumption is a significant factor in the exposure to food safety hazards, and therefore in establishing the probability of the occurrence of adverse health effects. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FACTORS AFFECTING FOOD SAFETY IN THE PHILIPPINES Based on the National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, rice can be considered as a staple food as it is consumed by 94.8% of the households in the Philippines at 290 g per capita intake (Figure 5) FNRI (2015). AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FOOD SAFETY ISSUES & CHALLENGES IN THE PHILIPPINES As stipulated in Section 19 Article V of the FSA 2013,the role of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Health (DOH) and other concerned agencies, is to enforce food safety and sanitary rules and regulations, inspection, and compliance of businesses rendering food services through the Code on Sanitation of the Philippines (Presidential Decree No. 856, 1975) These government agencies shall be working hand-in-hand in conducting research, monitoring, and documentation of food-related diseases. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY FOOD SAFETY ISSUES & CHALLENGES IN THE PHILIPPINES However, there are several indications which may imply that there are gaps in the Philippine food control system and these include: (1) gaps in food laws specifically on food inspection, analytical capability, inadequacies of governance, and response to food safety issues of the country as reported and researched in relevant literature; (2) incidences of foodborne diseases (FBD) outbreaks; and (3) records of food recalls AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY AB Plant & Livestock System & Engineering Communication and Information Technology AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is a broader term for Information Technology (IT), which refers to all communication technologies, including the internet, wireless networks, cell phones, computers, software, middleware, video-conferencing, social networking, and other media applications and services enabling users to access, retrieve, store, transmit, and manipulate information in a digital form. AGUSAN DEL SUR COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY ׀׀COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The value of ICT strategies as a means of bridging the digital divide and as a powerful tool for economic and social development around the world should not be underestimated in agricultural and related sectors. Improving extension of ICT services to farmers would effectively improve the transmission of global open data for agriculture and nutrition for development of sensible solutions addressing food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture issues.
