Thoughts Topics Contemporary Contributors to Management Introduction to Engineering Management Introduction Engineers are known for their great contributions to the development of the world’s civilization. There are many areas where their presence is necessary. Engineers may be found contributing their share in the various levels of organization. Engineers are expected to perform a variety of tasks depending on their specialization and job level. It is important to the engineer that he knows what is expected of him so that he may be able to perform his job effectively and efficiently. Engineers serve as the linchpin between conceptualization and execution. They oversee the successful completion of projects across industries by managing timelines, budgets, and quality while coordinating diverse teams. Introduction to Engineering Management 3 Function of engineering encompasses the following areas: 1. RESEARCH – where the engineer is engaged in the process of learning about nature and codifying this knowledge into usable theories 2. DESIGN and DEVELOPMENT - where the engineer undertakes the activity of turning a project concept to a finished physical item. FUNCTIONS OF THE 3. TESTING – where the engineer works in a unit where new ENGINEER products or parts are tested for work-ability 4. MANUFACTURING - where the engineer is directly in charge of production personnel or assumes responsibility for the product 5. CONSTRUCTION – this is where the construction engineer (a civil engineer) is either directly in charge of the construction personnel or may have responsibility for the quality of the construction process. 4 Introduction to Engineering Management Function of engineering encompasses the following areas: 6. SALES – where the engineer assists the company’s customers to meet their needs, especially those that require technical expertise. 7. CONSULTING – where the engineer works as a consultant of any individual or organization requiring his services. FUNCTIONS OF THE 8. GOVERNMENT – where the engineer may find employment in the government performing various tasks in regulating, ENGINEER monitoring, and controlling the activities of various public or private institutions. 9. TEACHING – where the engineer gets employment in a school and is assigned as a teacher of engineering courses. Some of them later become deans, vice presidents, and presidents. 10. MANAGEMENT – where the engineer is assigned to manage groups of people performing specific tasks. 5 Introduction to Engineering Management What is Engineering Management Engineering Refers to the activity combining technical Management? knowledge with the ability to organize and coordinate manpower, materials, machinery, and money. It covers the gap between engineering and business management, namely the combination of technical and economic decision-making with analytical skills, optimization capabilities, and technical product development. 6 “Management is guiding human and physical resources into a dynamic, hard-hitting organization until that attains its objectives to the satisfaction of those served, and with a high degree of morale and sense of attainment on the part of those rendering the service.” Lawrence A. Appley “Management is the process or form of work that involves the guidance or direction of a group of people towards organizational goals/objectives.’’ Rue & Byars What is ‘’The process of optimising human, material, and financial contributions Management? for achievement of organizational goals.’’ Pearce and Robinson, 1989 ‘’The process of planning, organising, leading and controlling the efforts of organization members and of using all organizational resources to achieve stated organizational goals..’’ Mescon, Albert and Khedouri, 1985 It is the art of coordinating resources: men, machine, material, money, market, information and knowledge. This ambit may be large or small but it ought to be properly defined. There must be an organization, which gives the body to Elements the management. It crystallises, carves out a shape and form for the management, which otherwise might look like of an amorphous heap. The organization may be elaborate and complex or it may be simple. Communication is the life blood of the management process. There is the need for all-pervasive coordination. Management requires constant evaluation, monitoring or control.
