The first Indian Media was established in the late 18th Century with the Print Media started in 1780s Print Media is one of the Oldest and Basic Forms of Mass Communication. The contribution of the print Media in providing the information and transfer of Knowledge is remarkable. Even after the advent of Electronic Media, the Print Media has not lost its charm or relevance. What is Print Media? Print Media has the advantage of making a longer impact on the minds of the readers, with more in-depth reporting and Analysis. Since business in the form of advertisements in the print was also flourishing, the media enjoyed a great deal of financial comfort and provided jobs to tens of thousands of people across the globe. What is Print Media? “Media” refers to various means of Communication. For Eg:- Television, Radio, Print and new media are the different types of media. All these forms use technology to propagate the message. Hence we could define all these media as media technology. EVOLUTION OF PRINT MEDIA Samachar Darpan in Bengali proved to be the first newspaper in the Indian language and the first issue of this daily was published from the Serampore Mission Press on May 23, 1818. On July 1, 1822 the first Gujarati newspaper the Bombay Samachar was published from Bombay, which is still extant. The first Hindi newspaper, the Samachar Sudha Varshan began in 1854. EVOLUTION OF PRINT MEDIA After such invention this industry had never looked back. It flourished like a growing tree and within no time it became a high valued and influencing industry. History of Print Media British rule had 2 significant influences on the development of country’s mass media. English language British started the early press James Augustus Hickey published the first Newspaper (also British started the system of broadcasting) Christian Missionares brought the first Printing to India in 15th & 16th Century to Publish religious literature. There are the four stages that distinguish development of Press in India 1.The First stage (1818-1867) Efforts of Raja Ram Mohan Roy 1.The First stage (1818-1867) Raja Ram Mohan Roy (22 May 1772 – 27 September 1833) was an Indian religious, social, and educational reformer who was one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabha , the precursor of the Brahmo Samaj, a social-religious reform movement in the Indian subcontinent. He was given the title of Raja by Akbar II, the Mughal emperor. His influence was apparent in the fields of politics, public administration, education and religion. He was known for his efforts to abolish the practices of sati and child marriage. Ram Mohan Roy has been called the "father of modern India" and the "father of the Indian renaissance" 1.The First stage (1818-1867) He used his publication such as Mirat-ul-Akbar, Brahmanical Magazine , Samvad Kaumudi and others to reform Hindu Society and attacked Social Practices such as “Sati”, “Child marriage”. He inspired Gangadhar Bhattacharya to found bengal Gazette the first Indian owned english language daily in 1816. The First stage (1818-1867) Calcutta and Mumbai were the active centers of the Indian Press. Press was slower to emerge in other parts of India. Indians owned a few newspaper during stage- Robert Knights founded the “Times of India” in 1861 Indu prakash also appeared in the same year 1.The First stage (1818-1867) British owned Press was often Critical of the Indians During 1857 Indian Mutiny, often called the first War of the Indian Independence, the british owned press attacked the indian establishment. 2.The Second Stage (1867- 1918) Emergence of Press involved in the nationalist struggle against the British raj. Well known nationalist like Bal Gangadhar Tilak,Mahadev Govind Ranade, Dadabhai Navroji used the press to advocate reforms and injustice. Reforms Minded writers used press to attack the practices such as Child marriage and advocated reform such as Widow remarriage and abolition of caste. Vernacular Press Act,(1878) Prevent Indian language Press from being critical of British rule The Indian National Congress founded in 1885. Nationalist like Bipin Chandrapal, Bal Gangadhar Tilak,Dadabhai Navroji were the active in journalism. 3.The Third Stage(1919- 1936) Indian Newspaper were advancing. Young India (1919) and Harijan (1932),Gujrathi weekly Navjeevan(1920) Gandhiji advocate free expression of ideas. In Madras T.Prakash started Swarajya(1922) to support the nationalist struggle for independence. The Hindustan Times(1923) with the help of Jawaharlal Nehru and Motilal Nehru. News paper supported nationalist Movement 4.The Fourth Stages (1937-1947) Pre Independence Period:- Press became increasingly Professionals and assertive. The Press was not only concerned about freedom struggle but also with the practical matters like news print availability and the modernizing of the machinery. Formation of all Indian Newspaper editors Conference(1940) Jawaharlal Nehru founded National Herald(1938) Post Independence Era It Supported the government’s effort at building the nation. Press Commission Press laws Press Council(1965) The Country as well as press faced a traumatic development in June 1975 when Indira Gandhi declared emergency. Imposed restriction on free speech and the press During 19 months of the emergency, the press struggled a lot After Emergency the press evolved into highly professional and market oriented business. It introduced a new technologies, designs and new style of journalism. Latest Technology in printing and production Computerized type setting equipment Several Indian newspaper and Media companies have diversified along three board trajectories. New paper like Indian Expression is an example of the diversification. It Publishes 19different Editions with the common national news and each particular region. Second type of diversification is reflected in the specialized content (E.g.:-Hindu Publishes Supplement through out the work on different subject. Third cross Media Ownership
