The athlete believes that there was a foul on the play that the referee had missed. In contrast, the referee is adamant that the play was within the rules and should not have been penalized. They argue back and forth about the nature of the rule and how the play relates to the rule. As the discussion continues, both the athlete and the referee get more emotional. There is some name calling, yelling, and some dismissive and angry body language. Eventually, the athlete is instructed to go to the sidelines by the coach and other referees. Following the heated discussion, the referee feels disrespected, defensive, and hurt given how critical the athlete was of their decision. The athlete feels like there is nothing that they can do, frustrated, and angry because they felt that the referee did not care about their opinion. She moves around the room, checking in on everyone, offering personalized encouragement, and sharing adjustments to make sure everyone is doing well. She wants to create a more engaging and sustainable project. Emma observes that the current activities aren't resonating with volunteers and there's a lack of long-term vision for the garden. She pictures a place that is appealing for people from a variety of backgrounds to visit, socialize, and watch as the gardening project grows. As such, Emma introduces themed gardening days, educational workshops, and social events. She also partners with local schools and organizations to expand the project's reach. Coupled with observing the current norms, relationships, and general community environment, Emma promotes the initiatives to community members and tries to gather feedback. She believes that this is an initiative that, with the right planning, can really make a difference. Because of that, productivity has slowed down and the team as a whole seems less driven. Recognizing the need to boost motivation, Jordan decided to hold a special team meeting. Jordan says: "I know we've been pushing ourselves hard, and it's been a challenging journey. But I want to remind you of why we started this project in the first place." Jordan displayed a slideshow of the team's brainstorming sessions, the requests from community members, and some early ideas. Jordan reminded the team: "Look at how far we've come! Each one of you has contributed something amazing to this project." Next, Jordan opened the floor for team members to share their thoughts and feelings. She listened attentively, acknowledging the challenges but also highlighting the strengths and achievements of each individual. As team members shared their excitement and pride, the atmosphere began to shift. Jordan reinforced their positive contributions, using affirmations to boost their confidence and build a sense of motivation.
