INFORMATION LITERACY Learning Objectives At the end of the discussion, the students will be able to: a. Students will define information literacy and articulate its importance in the context of media. b. Demonstrate an understanding of digital citizenship, including responsible online behavior, privacy protection, and the ethical use of information. c. Students will analyze and evaluate the credibility, reliability, and bias of information from a variety of sources. Information It comes from the Latin word “informare” which means, “formation of the mind or teaching”. The American Library Association has defined information literacy as abilities that enable a person to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” How is information literacy related to lifelong learning and critical thinking? There had been so much concerns circulating in the online world about the identity of the parties involved, one of which claims that the school is playing favorites between the parties, and favoring the bully in the video. The term media is the plural form of medium, which refers to a channel for general communication in a social context. Media Convergence Media Convergence It is the interconnection of information and communications technologies, computer networks, and media content. Henry Jenkins Convergence is a word that manages to describe technological, industrial, cultural, and social changes. Types of convergence: 1. Technological convergence-two or more different technologies begin to perform the same function. 2. Cultural convergence- it is the “flow” of stories from one format to another. 3. Organic convergence- also known as social convergence, or “media stacking”. It is a type that “simply happens” by Nature. 4. Global convergence- bridging the gap between geographically distant cultures and its influence to the people. 5. Economic convergence- it refers to the linking of companies and businesses to media.
